Special Service tools Removal 1. Loosen the wheel hub nut. 2. Remove the front road wheel and tire. 3. Remove the tie rod end retaining nut. 4. Using the special tool, detach the tie rod end. 5. Remove the subframe reinforcement plate retaining bolts. 6. Loosen the subframe rear mount bolt. 7. Loosen the subframe front mount bolt. 8. Remove and discard the wheel hub nut. 9. Detach the wheel knuckle. 1. Remove the lower arm ball joint retaining bolt. 2. Reposition the lower arm. 3. Detach the wheel knuckle. 10. Using the special tools, detach the halfshaft. 11. Remove the exhaust muffler inlet pipe. 12. Remove the halfshaft seal. 13. Remove the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt.

INSTALL OR CONNECT It is essential that the differential carrier, axle seals are not lubricated or damaged during this process. Prior to drive axle installation, cover the shock mounting bracket, lower control arm bail stud, and all other sharp edges with a shop towel so as not to damage the boot. 1. Axle shaft to differential carrier. With both hands on the tripot housing, align the splines on the shaft with the differential carrier. Then center the drive axle into the differential carrier seal and firmly push the shaft straight into the differential carrier until the snap ring seats into place. NOTICE: Be careful that the safety stand does not damage or bend any components it may contact. 2. Raise the safety stand to support the weight of the lower control arm. Important: It will be necessary to slightly start the knuckle onto the drive axle while simultaneously guiding the lower ball stud to its proper 1997 Oldsmobile Truck Bravada V6-4.3L VIN W location on the steering knuckle. 3. Assemble the lower ball joint. 4. Lower shock mount. 5. Upper ball joint. 6. Drive axle washer and nut. 7. Drive axle nut. – Tighten bolts to 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.). 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. ABS Bracket located on the top of the upper control arm ball joint. Brackets from upper control arm holding both the ABS wire and brake hose. Caliper and rotor. Tires and wheel. Remove safety stands.

1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly. 2. Install a brass drift or a screwdriver to prevent the rotor from turning, Fig. 7 . 3. Remove axle nut and washer. 4. Remove stabilizer shaft or link from control arm. 5. Remove nut from ball joint, then separate ball joint from steering knuckle using separator tool No. J-36226, or equivalent. 6. Remove drive axle from hub and bearing assembly using front hub spindle remover tool No. J-28733-A, or equivalent, Fig. 8 . 7. Remove drive axle from transaxle using axle shaft remover puller tool Nos. J-33008, J-29794 and slide hammer tool No. J-2619-01, or equivalents, if necessary, Fig. 9 . INSTALLATION 1. Install drive axle into the transaxle using seal protector J-37292-B, or equivalent 2. Seat snap ring by placing a screwdriver into the groove on the joint housing and tapping until seated, Fig. 9 . 3. Grasp the inner housing and pull outward. If the snap ring is properly seated, the axle will remain in place. 4. Install drive axle into hub and bearing assembly. 5. Install lower ball joint to steering knuckle and tighten to specifications. 6. Install stabilizer shaft or link to control arm, tighten to specifications. 7. Insert a screwdriver or drift into caliper and rotor to prevent rotor from turning, Fig. 7 . 8. Install new hub nut and washer, tighten to specification. 9. Install tire and wheel assembly, then lower vehicle

NOTE:Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in this procedure. REMOVAL 1. Drain the engine cooling system. 2. Remove the intake manifold. 3. Remove the exhaust manifold. 4. Remove the camshafts. 5. Install the center engine front cover. 6. Install the front engine support insulator. 7. Remove the three bar support. 8. Remove the power steering pulley cover. 9. Remove the power steering pump pulley. 10. Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump out of the way. 11. Remove the power steering pump bracket. 12. Remove the generator bracket. 13. Remove the bolts and position the thermostat housing out of the way. 14. Remove the cylinder head. – Remove the bolts in the indicated sequence. – Remove and discard the head gasket. 15. Check the cylinder head for distortion. INSTALLATION

Remove the fill plug from the axle. 2. Remove the drain plug from the axle. 3. Drain the axle lubricant. 4. Inspect the oil and the case for metal chips. Determine the source of the metal chips, such as a broken gear or bearing cage. 5. Check the ring gear backlash. This information can be used in order to determine the cause of the axle problem. The information will also help when setting up and preloading the differential case. Determine the cause of the axle problem before disassembly, if possible. Disassembly Procedure 1. Remove the upper differential carrier assembly bushing by performing the following steps: 1.1. Install the J36616-2 (1), the J33791-1 (2), the thrust bearing (3), the J21474-18 (4), and the forcing screw as shown. 1.2. Remove the upper differential carrier assembly bushing by holding the forcing screw and tightening the J21474-18. 2. Remove the lower differential carrier assembly bushing by performing the following steps: 2.1. Install the J21474-18 (1), the thrust bearing (2), the J33791-1 (3), the J36616-2 (4), and the forcing screw as shown. 2.2. Remove the lower differential carrier assembly bushing by holding the forcing screw and tightening the J21474-18. 3. Remove the front axle actuator. 4. Remove the inner axle shaft housing to differential carrier assembly bolts.
