CAUTION: Performing the following procedures without first removing the ABS wheel-speed sensor may possibly cause an open circuit in the wiring harness if it is pulled by mistake. Before performing the following procedures, disconnect the ABS wheel-speed sensor connector (axle side) and fix the wiring harness to an appropriate place where it will not be pulled by mistake while servicing the vehicle. 1. Remove in the order indicated in the table. 2. Install in the reverse order of removal. 3. After installation, inspect the front wheel alignment and adjust it if necessary. (See FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT ). LOCKNUT REMOVAL NOTE 1. Knock the crimped portion of the locknut outward using a small chisel and a hummer. 2. Lock the hub by applying the brakes. 3. Remove the locknut. BRAKE CALIPER REMOVAL NOTE 1. Remove the brake caliper component from the steering knuckle and suspend it out of the way using a cable. WHEEL HUB, STEERING KNUCKLE COMPONENT REMOVAL NOTE 1. Separate the shock absorber from the wheel hub, steering knuckle component by tapping the upper part of the steering knuckle with a hammer.

WARNING: Carefully read cautionary information on product label. For EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION seek medical advice. In the USA or Canada on Ford/Motorcraft products call: 1-800-959-3673. For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury. CAUTION: Do not spill brake fluid onto painted or plastic surfaces. If spilled, wipe up immediately before damage to the plastic or painted surfaces occurs. 1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-00. 2. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table. To remove individual parts, only carry out the listed steps: 3. To install, reverse the removal procedure. 4. If the hydraulic system was opened, bleed the brake system. For additional information, refer to Brake System Bleeding in this section. Item 2: Brake Caliper Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang by the flexible brake hose. Support the caliper to the vehicle. Item 11: Brake Disc Removal Note 1. If removing the brake disc, only remove the caliper bracket bolts and position the caliper and bracket aside. Item 10: Spindle Nut Installation Note 1. Tighten the spindle nut to the specified torque. Rotate the hub counter-clockwise 5 rotations and then recheck the torque. Item 3: Brake Disc Pads Installation Note 1. CAUTION: Install a new lining if worn to or past the specified thickness above the metal backing plate or if the pad is damaged. Install new pads in complete axle sets. If replacing the brake pads, use a suitable suction device, remove the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir until it is half filled. 2. If replacing the brake pads, use a suitable tool to push the brake caliper pistons into the caliper bore. 3. One brake disc pad kit contains the pads required for both the RH and LH side. Item 1: Caliper Bolt Installation Note 1. Tighten the bottom caliper bolt and then the top caliper bolt. Item 11: Brake Disc Inspection Note 1. NOTE: If machining is necessary use a hub-mount brake lathe to machine the front brake disc. For additional information, refer to section Section 100-04. Measure the front brake disc, and resurface as necessary. Install a new front brake disc if beyond specification.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-00. 2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-00. 3. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table. 4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. 5. Fill the axle with the specified quantity of the specified lubricant. For additional information, refer to the Specifications in this section. Item 2: Rear Disc Brake Caliper Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose. Provide a suitable support. Position the rear disc brake caliper aside. For additional information, refer to Section 206-00. Item 7: Differential Pinion Shaft Removal Note 1. Move the differential pinion shaft out far enough to remove the U-washers. Replace the shaft and install the lock bolt finger tight when U-washers are removed. Item 8: U-washer Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves. Remove the U-washers. 1. Push the axle shafts inboard. 2. Remove the U-washers. Item 10 and 11: Wheel Bearing Oil Seal and Axle Shaft Bearing Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Never remove the wheel bearing oil seal by itself. Always remove the wheel bearing oil seal and the rear wheel bearing at the same time. For the 8.8 inch rear axle, use the special tools to remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal. 2. CAUTION: Never remove the wheel bearing oil seal by itself. Always remove the wheel bearing oil seal and the rear wheel bearing at the same time. For the 9.75 inch and the 10.25 inch rear axles, use the special tools to remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal. Item 11: Axle Shaft Bearing Installation Note 1. For the 8.8 inch and the 9.75 inch rear axles, use the special tools to install the rear axle wheel bearing. 2. For the 10.25 inch rear axle, use the special tools shown to install the rear axle wheel bearing. Item 10: Wheel Bearing Oil Seal Installation Note 1. Use the special tools shown to install the rear wheel bearing oil seal. Item 8: U-washer Installation Note 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the U-washer grooves. Install the U-washers. 1. Position the two U-washers on the button end of the axle shafts. 2. Pull the axle shafts outward.

Removal 1. Open engine compartment hood and fit paint protection covers to fenders. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels. 2. Release the tension on the parking brake cable by moving the parking brake caliper lever away from the cable end. Remove cable from parking brake cable lever. See Fig. 32 . 3. Remove the parking brake cable from the rear brake caliper. On vehicles with manually adjusted parking brakes, remove the retaining clip. See Fig. 33 . On vehicles with self-adjusting parking brakes, release the tabs on the parking brake cable housing. See Fig. 38 . NOTE: To prevent the loss of brake fluid, apply the brake pedal hold down tool and adjust to hold the brake pedal down 1.6″ (40 mm). Install a bleeder bottle to the bleed nipple and loosen the bleed nipple. 4. Remove union bolt from the rear brake caliper hose and discard sealing washers. See Fig. 61 . Remove brake hose from rear brake caliper. 5. Tighten the bleed nipple and remove the bleeder tube and bottle. Remove and discard the rear brake caliper retaining bolts. See Fig. 62 . Remove the caliper. 6. Clean and inspect all associated parts. Installation CAUTION: Retracting the caliper piston may cause the fluid reservoir to overflow. Remove brake fluid spillage immediately from paint work with clean water. NOTE: The left rear brake caliper piston retracts counterclockwise and the right rear caliper piston retracts clockwise. 1. Using the Brake Caliper Piston Retractor Tool (206-080) and Crankshaft Pulley/Damper Remover (303- 588), fully retract the rear brake caliper piston into the caliper housing. See Fig. 64 .
