Removal 1. Remove the rear brake drums; refer to the procedure in this section. 2. NOTE: A slight amount of fluid is nearly always present and acts as a lubricant for the piston. Inspect the wheel cylinder for excessive leakage. 3. Inspect: 1. Rear brake shoes and linings (2200) for contamination. 2. Rear brake shoes and linings for minimum thickness. 3. Springs for heat discoloration and distortion. Replace components if necessary. 4. Clamp the brake cylinder. 5. Remove the brake shoe retracting springs (2296). 6. Remove the brake shoe adjuster assembly. 1. Release the brake shoe adjusting lever spring. 2. Remove the brake shoe adjusting lever. 3. Remove the brake shoe adjusting lever spring. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Remove the brake shoe adjusting lever cable guide (2A179). Remove the brake shoe adjusting lever cable (2A178). Remove the brake shoe anchor pin guide plate (2028). Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw spring (2049). Remove the brake adjuster screw assembly. 7. Remove the primary brake shoe parking brake lever link (2A642) and parking brake link spring (2A601). 8. Remove the rear brake shoes and linings. 1. Remove the brake shoe hold-down springs. 2. Remove the rear brake shoes and linings. 3. Remove the brake shoe hold-down spring pins (2069). 9. Disconnect the parking brake lever (2A637) from the rear brake secondary shoe and lining. Installation 1. Clean and lubricate the brake backing plate (2211). Use Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or-K or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B or Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound, D7AZ- 19A331-A, WA-10 or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A. 2. Connect the parking brake lever to the rear brake secondary shoe and lining.
