Master Cylinder, In Vehicle WARNING: Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake master cylinder reservoir to run dry during the bleeding operation. Keep the brake master cylinder reservoir filled with the specified brake fluid. Never reuse the brake fluid that has been drained from the hydraulic system. CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water. NOTE: When any part of the hydraulic system has been disconnected for repair or new installation, air may get into the system and cause spongy brake pedal action. This requires bleeding of the hydraulic system after it has been correctly connected. The hydraulic system can be bled manually or with pressure bleeding equipment. 1. NOTE: When a new brake master cylinder has been installed or the system has been emptied, or partially emptied, it should be primed to prevent air from getting into the system. Disconnect the brake master cylinder outlet tubes. 2. Install short brake tubes with ends submerged in the brake master cylinder reservoir and fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with High Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid C6AZ- 19542-AB or equivalent DOT 3 fluid meeting Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A. 3. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal until clear fluid flows from both brake tubes without air bubbles. 4. Remove the short brake tubes and install the brake outlet tubes. 5. Bleed each brake tube at the brake master cylinder as follows: 1. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal and then hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. 2. Loosen the rearmost brake tube fittings until a stream of brake fluid comes out. Have an assistant maintain pressure on the brake pedal while tightening the brake tube fitting. 3. Repeat this operation until clear, bubble-free fluid comes out. 4. Refill the brake master cylinder reservoir as necessary. Repeat the bleeding operation at the front brake tube. 6. While the assistant maintains pressure on the brake pedal, tighten the brake tubes.

Removal All vehicles 1. Remove the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04. Vehicles with rear drum brakes 2. Disconnect the brake tube. 1. Clamp the flexible brake hose. 2. Disconnect the brake tube union. 3. Remove the retaining clip. 4. Detach the flexible brake hose. Vehicles with rear disc brakes 3. Detach the flexible brake hose and the brake pad wear sensor wiring loom (if equipped) from the strut and spring assembly. 4. Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor electrical connector (if equipped). 5. Detach the anti-lock brake system (ABS) sensor and wiring loom. All Vehicles 6. Detach the stabilizer bar connecting link and bushing from the front arm. 7. Detach the rear arm from the wheel spindle. 8. Detach the tie-bar from the wheel spindle. 9. Detach the front arm from the wheel spindle. 10. Remove the wheel spindle to strut and spring assembly pinch bolt. 11. CAUTION: Secure the wheel spindle to prevent damage to the parking brake cable and brake hose (disc brake vehicles only). Detach the wheel spindle from the strut and spring assembly. 12. Detach the strut and spring assembly from the crossmember. 1. Raise the strut and spring assembly on a jack. 2. Detach the strut and spring assembly from the crossmember. 13. Remove the strut and spring assembly.

Some vehicles may exhibit a grabbing condition from the rear brakes during the first few brake applications. The condition only occurs after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE To service, reduce/minimize moisture intrusion into the rear drum brake assemblies by applying Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the brake backing plate. 1. Place vehicle on hoist and remove the rear wheels. 2. Remove the rear brake drums and replace the rear linings. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 206-02. WARNING Do not breathe dust or use compressed air to blow dust from storage containers or friction components. Remove dust using government-approved techniques. Friction component dust may be a cancer and lung disease hazard. Exposure to potentially hazardous components may occur if dusts are created during repair of friction components, such as brake pads and clutch discs. Exposure may also cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and may cause allergic reactions and/or may lead to other chronic health effects. If irritation persists, seek medical attention or advice. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. 3. Inspect the rear brake assemblies for damaged, missing and/or improperly seated adjuster plug or parking brake cable. 4. Inspect and clean the lining contact area of the brake drum; machine if necessary. 5. Reinstall the rear brake drums and adjust the lining to drum clearance per WSM, Section 206-02. 6. Thoroughly clean the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate to promote proper adhesion of sealant. 7. Apply Motorcraft(R) Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate at the following inter[ace areas (Figure 1): ^ Axle Flange ^ Wheel Cylinder ^ Parking Brake Cable ^ Hold Down Pins NOTE AVOID GETTING SEALANT ON THE BRAKE BLEED SCREW AND BRAKE TUBE NUT. 8. Reinstall the rear wheels and torque lug nuts per Workshop Manual, Section 204-04.
