Cause Typically the noise is caused by either the transmission rear dust cover contacting the flexplate (refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 05-06-01-028) or a cracked flexplate (sometimes also referred to as a flywheel). Correction With the vehicle raised and supported on a suitable hoist, verify that the noise is coming from the flexplate area. If the noise is present, follow the procedure below. If the noise is not coming from the flexplate area, refer to Lower Engine Noise, Regardless of Engine Speed in SI. Important: The following information only applies to vehicles with the noise coming from the flexplate area.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT 1. Retainer and electrical connector from fluid level sensor. 2. Drain brake fluid front mister cylinder reservoir. 3. Reservoir hose from master cylinder. Plug hose to prevent fluid loss and contamination. 4. Brake pipes from master cylinder. Plug open pipes to prevent fluid loss and contamination. 5. Two attaching nuts. 6. Master cylinder. 7. Reservoir, if it is to he used on replacement master cylinder. INSTALL OR CONNECT Reservoir onto master cylinder, as needed. Master cylinder on to power booster. Attaching nuts. Tighten to 27 Nm (20 lb. ft.). Brake pipes. Tighten brake pipe fittings to 15 Nm (11 lb. ft.). Reservoir hose onto master cylinder. Fill master cylinder reservoir to full level mark using only Delco Supreme 11 Brake Fluid, or equivalent DOT 3 brake fluid. 7. Electrical connector to fluid level sensor, secure with retainer. 8. comment on shaking/vibration in the steering wheel, floor or seat while driving at highway speeds (typically between 60-72 mph (96-115 km/h)) on smooth roads. These specific vehicles may be sensitive to various rotating mass assemblies, especially if they are considered to be out-of-balance. 1. Visually inspect the tires and the wheels. Inspect for evidence of the following conditions and correct as necessary: • Missing balance weights • Bent rim flange • Irregular tire wear • Incomplete bead seating • Tire irregularities • Mud/ice build-up in wheel • Stones in the tire tread 3. Road test the vehicle with the Electronic Vibration Analyzer (EVA) essential tool for a sufficient distance on a known, smooth road surface to duplicate the condition. Record the Hertz (Hz) reading as displayed by the EVA onto the tire data worksheet found at the end of this bulletin. This should be done after a tire break-in period of at least 10 miles (16 km) at 45 mph (72 km/h) or greater, in order to eliminate any possible tire flat-spotting. 4. If the road test indicates a shake/vibration still exists, check the imbalance of each tire/wheel assembly on a known, calibrated, off-car dynamic balancer. If any assembly calls for more than ¼ ounce on either rim flange, remove all balance weights and rebalance to as close to zero as possible.

Steering Vibration/Shudder/Moan During Parking Maneuvers on Dry Pavement (Install Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and/or Return (Outlet) Hose Assembly) 1995-99 Buick Riviera 1997-2001 Buick Park Avenue, Ultra 2000-2001 Buick LeSabre 2000-2001 Pontiac Bonneville steering vibration, shudder or moan noise when steering during parking maneuvers on dry pavement. Correction Install a new power steering pressure (inlet) hose assembly on the following vehicles: • 1995-98 Buick Riviera • 1997-98 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra Install a new power steering pressure (inlet) and return (outlet) hose assembly on the following vehicles: • 1999 Buick Riviera • 1999-2001 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra • 2000-2001 Buick LeSabre • 2000-2001 Pontiac Bonneville 1. Verify that the power steering pump reservoir is full. • If fluid level is low, fill and check for leaks. • If power steering system has air in the system, perform the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure as described in the Power Steering System sub-section of the Service Manual. Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. Verify that the accessory drive belt is in good condition and that the pulleys are not bent or damaged. Verify proper belt tension and operation of the belt tensioner. Check for power steering hose ground out conditions. Check for good engine idle and correct engine RPM. 1. Loosen the AIR exhaust pipe (2) hose pinch clamp. 2. Disconnect the AIR exhaust hose (1) from the AIR pump (3). 3. Disconnect the AIR pump electrical connector (1). 4. Remove the three nuts (5) securing AIR pump bracket to transmission mount. 5. Remove the AIR pump and bracket as an assembly (4).NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 1. Secure the AIR pump and bracket (4) to the transmission mount with the three nuts (5). Tighten Tighten the three nuts securing the AIR pump mounting bracket to 50 N.m (37 lb ft). 2. Connect the AIR pump electrical connector (1).
