Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor connector from intake air duct. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body. Disconnect the breather tube from the valve cover. Remove the air filter housing. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right front splash shield from wheelwell. Remove serpentine accessory drive belt. 3. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts. It is NOT necessary to remove crankshaft sprocket center bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. Lower vehicle. 4. Support engine assembly from above with Support Fixture (J-28467-B). See Fig. 1 . Remove engine mount bracket from timing belt end of engine. See Fig. 2 . 5. Remove front timing belt cover. Using crankshaft center bolt, rotate crankshaft one full turn clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). 6. Align mark on crankshaft sprocket with notch at bottom of rear timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Align camshaft sprocket timing marks with notches on valve cover. See Fig. 4 . CAUTION: Engine damage could result if camshaft sprockets are not properly aligned with notches on valve cover. 7. Loosen the automatic tensioner bolt. Use an Allen wrench to rotate tensioner and relieve tension on timing belt. See Fig. 5 . Remove timing belt. Installation 1. Ensure crankshaft and camshaft timing timing marks are still aligned. Install the timing belt. See Fig. 6 . Turn the timing belt tensioner clockwise to tension the timing belt. Turn tensioner until the pointer aligns with the notch on the rear timing belt cover. Tighten automatic tensioner bolt. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Using crankshaft center bolt, turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) 2 full revolutions. Ensure timing belt tensioner pointer is still aligned with notch. 3. If timing belt tensioner is correctly aligned, install timing belt cover. Install the engine mount bracket on the timing belt end of engine. Install crankshaft pulley. Install serpentine accessory drive belt. Install right front splash shield. Install right front wheel. 4. Install air filter housing. Connect air intake temperature sensor connector. Connect negative battery cable.

1. CAUTION: At no time, when the timing chain(s) are removed and the cylinder heads (6049) are installed, may the crankshaft (6303) and camshafts (6250) be rotated. Failure to follow these directions will result in valve and/or piston damage. NOTE: Because this is not a free-wheeling engine, if it has jumped time, there will be damage to the valves and pistons (6108) and will require the removal of the cylinder heads . The camshaft sprockets (6256) should only be disassembled from the camshafts when one of the components is to be replaced. Remove valve covers (6582) , oil pan (6675) and engine front cover (6019) as described. 2. Remove crankshaft position sensor pulse wheel. 3. Rotate engine to No. 1 top dead center (TDC). 4. NOTE: Cam Positioning Tool Adapters 303-413 (T92P-6256-A) and Cam Positioning Tool 303-380 (T91P-6256-A) MUST be installed on camshaft to prevent camshaft from rotating. Install Cam Positioning Tool Adapters 303-413 (T92P-6256-A) and Cam Positioning Tool 303-380 (T91P-6256-A) on flats of camshafts . 5. Remove two bolts retaining RH timing chain tensioner (6L266) to cylinder head and remove timing chain tensioner . 6. Remove RH timing chain tensioner arm (6L253) . 7. Remove two bolts retaining RH timing chain guide (6K297) to cylinder head and remove timing chain guide . 8. Remove RH timing chain from camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprockets (6306) . 9. NOTE: Cam Positioning Tool Adapters 303-413 (T92P-6256-A) and Cam Positioning Tool 303-380 (T91P-6256-A) MUST be installed on camshaft to prevent camshaft from rotating. Remove two bolts retaining LH timing chain tensioner to cylinder head and remove timing chain tensioner . 10. Remove LH timing chain tensioner arm . 11. Remove two bolts retaining LH timing chain guide to cylinder head and remove timing chain guide . 12. Remove LH timing chain from camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket . 13. If necessary, remove camshaft sprockets and crankshaft sprockets as described. 14. CAUTION: Do not rotate crankshaft and/or camshafts . Engine damage may occur. Inspect the plastic running face on timing chain tensioner arms and timing chain guides . If worn or damaged, remove and clean oil pan and oil pump screen cover and tube (6622) . Installation

Removing Cylinder head installed Remove noise insulation panel -arrows-. Remove front bumper => Repair Manual, Body Exterior, Repair Group 63 Move lock carrier to service position => Repair Manual, Body Exterior, Repair Group 50 Remove ribbed belt => Page 13-1. Remove toothed belt => Page 13-4. Left cylinder head Remove left-hand cylinder head cover => Page 15-22. Right cylinder head Remove right-hand cylinder head cover => Page 15-25 All: Unbolt Hall sensor housing (10 Nm). Remove bolt securing Hall sensor rotor (20 Nm) and carefully lever off rotor using a screwdriver. Insert camshaft clamp 3391 in securing plates of two camshafts. Loosen both camshaft bolts and remove approx. 5 turns. Take out camshaft clamp 3391. Pull off both camshaft sprockets with special tool T40001. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry oil feed lines for camshaft bearings out of camshaft bearings. Make sure that the retaining catches do not break off when prying out the oil lines. Secure camshaft adjuster using retainer for chain tensioner 3366. Note: Do not over tighten retainer for chain tensioner, otherwise camshaft adjuster can be damaged. Check TDC position of camshafts once again. Note: The two markings on the camshafts must be in line with the two arrows on the bearing caps. Clean drive chain and camshaft chain sprockets in vicinity of arrows on bearing caps and mark position of chain on sprockets with paint opposite two arrows. Note: The distance between the two arrows (and thus between the paint markings) is 16 rollers on the chain. The notch on the exhaust camshaft is offset slightly towards the inside in relation to chain roller -1-. Do not mark the chain with a center punch or by making a notch or similar.

1. CAUTION: At no time, when the timing chain(s) are removed and the cylinder heads (6049) are installed, may the crankshaft (6303) and/or camshafts (6250) be rotated. Failure to follow these directions will result in valve and/or piston damage. NOTE: Because this is not a free-wheeling engine, and it jumps time, there will be damage to the valves and/or pistons (6108) and will require the removal of the cylinder heads. The camshaft sprockets (6256) should only be disassembled from the camshafts when one of the components is to be replaced. Remove valve covers (6582) and engine front cover (6019) as described. 2. Remove crankshaft position sensor pulse wheel. 3. Rotate engine to No. 1 top dead center (TDC). 4. NOTE: This will prevent accidental rotation of the camshafts. NOTE: Cam Positioning Tool Adapters T92P-6256-A and Cam Positioning Tool T91P-6256-A must be installed on camshaft to prevent camshaft from rotating. Install Cam Positioning Tool Adapters T92P-6256-A and Cam Positioning Tool T91P-6256-A on flats of camshaft. 5. Remove two bolts retaining RH timing chain tensioner (6L266) to cylinder head and remove timing chain tensioner. 6. Remove RH timing chain tensioner arm (6L253). 7. Remove two bolts retaining RH timing chain guide (6K297) to cylinder head and remove timing chain guide. 8. Remove RH timing chain from camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket (6306). 9. NOTE: Cam Positioning Tool Adapters T92P-6256-A and Cam Positioning Tool T91P-6256-A must be installed on camshaft to prevent camshaft from rotating. Remove two bolts retaining LH timing chain tensioner to cylinder head and remove timing chain tensioner. 10. Remove LH timing chain tensioner arm. 11. Remove two bolts retaining LH timing chain guide to cylinder head and remove timing chain guide. 12. Remove LH timing chain from camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. 13. If necessary, remove camshaft sprockets and crankshaft sprockets as described. 14. CAUTION: Do not rotate crankshaft and/or camshafts or possible engine damage may occur. Inspect the plastic running face on timing chain tensioner arms and timing chain guides. If worn or damaged, remove and clean oil pan (6675) and oil pump screen cover and tube (6622).

1. Remove the engine front cover; refer to the procedure in this section. 2. Remove the (A) crankshaft sensor ring from the (B)crankshaft (6303). 3. On WEP engines, use the (A) Camshaft Positioning Tool to position the (B) camshaft. 4. on REP engines, rotate the crankshaft until both camshaft keyways are 90° from the cam cover surface. On REP and WEP engines, make sure the copper links line up with the dots on the camshaft sprockets. 5. On REP equipped engines, install the (A) Cam Positioning Tool and the Camshaft Positioning Tool Adapters on the (B) camshaft. 6. On WEP engines, install the (A) Camshaft Holding Tool on the (B) camshaft. 7. Remove the (A) LH timing chain tensioner bolts and the (B) LH timing chain tensioner. 8. Remove the (A) RH timing chain tensioner bolts and the (B) RH timing chain tensioner. 9. Remove the LH and RH timing chain tensioner guides from the dowel pins. 10. CAUTION: At no time, when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed may the crankshaft or camshaft be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur. Remove the RH and LH timing chains and crankshaft sprockets. 1. Lift RH timing chain off of the camshaft sprocket and slide the timing chain and crankshaft sprocket off of the crankshaft. 2. Lift the LH timing chain off the camshaft sprocket and slide the timing chain and the crankshaft sprocket off of the crankshaft. 11. On REP engines, remove the chain guides. 1. Remove the LH timing chain guide bolts. 2. Remove the LH timing chain guide. 3. Remove the RH timing chain guide bolts. 4. Remove the RH timing chain guide.
