All Vehicles 1. CAUTION: The maximum amount by which the engine management system will adjust the camshaft timing (VCT control unit) is limited to two degrees. As a result of this an extremely high degree of accuracy is required for any work which affects the valve timing. NOTE: The locations of engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine. NOTE: Operation steps which only apply to certain model variants and therefore do not apply to all vehicles are clearly marked. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 3. Loosen the right-hand front wheel nuts. 4. Remove the right-hand front wheel. 5. Remove the engine underschield (if equipped). 6. Remove the right-hand front splash shield. 7. NOTE: Mark the accessory drive belt direction if the belt is to be reused. Remove the accessory drive belt. 1. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts. 2. Working clockwise, loosen the belt and remove it. ? Remove the water pump pulley. 4. Remove the belt idler pulley. 8. NOTE: Using the access hole in the bottom of transaxle case to stop rotation of engine. Remove the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper. CAUTION: The removal of the lower part of the engine front cover is necessary to avoid damage to the timing belt. Remove the lower part of the engine front cover. Vehicles with manual transaxle 10. Loosen the center bolt of the right-hand engine support insulator two turns. Vehicles with automatic transaxle 11. Loosen the center bolt of the right-hand engine support insulator two turns. All Vehicles 2000 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual 12. Loosen the center bolt of the left-hand engine support insulator two turns. 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Detach the coolant expansion tank and position it to one side. ? Disconnect the speed control cable (if equipped) from the coolant expansion tank.

NOTE: Refer to the exploded view under the assembly procedure in this section. The 5.4L (3V) is a V-8 engine with the following features: Single overhead camshafts Three valves per cylinder Sequential Multi-Port Fuel Injection (SFI) Aluminum cylinder heads Cast iron, 90-degree V-cylinder block Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) Individually chain-driven camshafts with a hydraulic timing chain tensioner on each timing chain Distributorless ignition system Electronic Returnless Fuel System (ERFS) Engine Identification Always refer to these labels when installation of new parts is necessary, or when checking engine calibrations. The engine parts often differ within a Cubic Inch Displacement (CID) family. Verification of the identification codes will make sure that the correct parts are obtained. These codes contain all the pertinent information relating to the dates, optional equipment and revisions. The Ford Master Parts Catalog contains a complete listing of the codes and their application. Engine Cylinder Identification Exhaust Emission Control System Operation and necessary maintenance of the exhaust emission control devices used on this engine are covered in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual. Induction System The SFI system provides the fuel/air mixture needed for combustion in the cylinders. The 8 solenoid-operated fuel injectors: are mounted in the intake manifold. meter fuel into the air intake stream in accordance with engine demand. are positioned so that their tips direct fuel just ahead of the engine intake valves. supply fuel from the fuel tank with a fuel pump mounted in the fuel tank. Valve Train The valve train operates as follows: Ball-tip hydraulic lash adjusters provide automatic lash adjustment. ISSUE Some 2009-2010 F150 vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3V or 5.4L 3V engine, Expedition and Navigator vehicles may exhibit a low frequency knocking noise from the engine at hot idle only. The noise is predominately heard from the right front wheel well area and/or the right hand (RH) engine cam cover. This noise may be generated from the RH variable camshaft timing (VCT) phaser assembly. This procedure was created to diagnose the RH VCT phaser assembly. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE The Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) tests were developed specifically for the vehicles and Power Control Module (PCM) strategies for these vehicles. Per Workshop Manual (WSM), Powertrain Controls and Emissions Diagnostics (PC/ED) and Scheduled Maintenance Guide, review customer service history for use of any aftermarket oil filters. 1. Check for possible diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). a. No DTCs present, proceed to Step 2. b. If DTCs are present, discontinue with this procedure and refer to the PC/ED manual for diagnostics. 2. Engine must be at full operating temperature over 190 °F (88 °C) cylinder head temperature (CHT). 3. Connect IDS diagnostics tool and verify software version is at the latest level (63 or later required). 4. Begin a new vehicle session. 5. Open Tool Box selection.
