1. Remove the roller followers. For additional information, refer to Roller Followers in this section. 2. Remove the RH timing chain for the RH side and both timing chains for the LH side. For additional information, refer to Timing Drive Components in this section. 3. Install the special tool. 4. Remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket (6250) and the intake camshaft bolt, washer and spacer. 5. Remove the special tool. 6. Compress the tensioner (6L266) and install a lock pin. 7. Remove the timing chain, the sprocket, and intake camshaft sprocket spacer. 8. NOTE: LH shown; RH similar. Remove the bolts. 9. CAUTION: The outer bolts on the outer cam bearing cap (exhaust) are longer and must be returned to the same location or engine damage may occur. NOTE: Identify the camshaft to cylinder head location. Caps are not interchangeable. Remove the bolts and the camshaft bearing cap assemblies. 10. Remove the camshafts (6250). Installation 1. NOTE: LH shown; RH similar. Install the camshafts. ? Lubricate the camshafts with clean engine oil. 2. Install the camshaft bearing cap assemblies.

1. NOTE: Do not turn the crankshaft until instructed to do so. Remove the engine front cover; refer to the procedure in this section. 2. Remove the (A) crankshaft sensor ring from the (B) crankshaft. 3. Rotate crankshaft until the crankshaft keyway points toward the top of the engine (12 o’clock). 4. Install the (A) Camshaft Holding Tools on the (B) LH and RH camshafts. 5. Remove the (A) LH timing chain tensioner bolts and the (B) LH timing chain tensioner. 6. Remove the (A) RH timing chain tensioner bolts and the (B) RH timing chain tensioner. 7. Remove the LH and RH timing chain tensioner guides from the dowel pins. 8. CAUTION: Unless otherwise instructed, at no time, when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed may the crankshaft or camshaft be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur. Remove the RH and LH timing chains and crankshaft sprockets. 1. Lift the RH timing chain off the camshaft sprocket and slide the timing chain and crankshaft sprocket off the crankshaft. 2. Lift the LH timing chain off the camshaft sprocket and slide the timing chain and the crankshaft sprocket off the crankshaft.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to valves and pistons, do NOT rotate the crankshaft and / or camshaft(s) when removing the timing chain(s) and installing the cylinder heads. Because this is not a free-wheeling engine, if it has “jumped time,” there will be damage to the valves and / or pistons which will require the removal of the cylinder heads. The cam sprocket should be disassembled from the camshaft only when one of the components must be replaced. 1. Remove all necessary components to access the timing chains. 2. Rotate the engine to No. 1 TDC. 3. Install No. 6009 (511532) on flats of the camshaft as shown to prevent accidental rotation of the camshafts. 4. Perform camshaft service as required. 5. Refer to the vehicle service manual for the correct camshaft-to-crankshaft timing procedure. of the components must be replaced. 1. Remove all necessary components to access the timing chains. 2. Rotate the engine to No. 1 top dead center. 3. Disassembly: Install No. 6020 Camshaft Positioning Tool (511555) and No. 6009 Cam Positioning Tool (511532) into each camshaft end, as shown, before removing timing chain tensioners and chains to prevent valve train damage. 4. Assembly: Install No. 6020 Camshaft Positioning Tool (511555) and No. 6009 Cam Positioning Tool (511532) into each camshaft end, as shown, before installing timing chains and tensioners to prevent valve train damage.

Installation Instructions 1. Clean everything! Make sure that the engine mounting surfaces and your new timing set have been thoroughly cleaned with a good solvent. 2. If you are using a timing set with three keyways, select the appropriate keyway for your camshaft timing specifications. COMP Cams ® recommends the standard timing position for most applications. This position uses the round or “O” timing and keyway marks. Standard Timing Location: This is the same as original O.E.M. setting. Use keyway and crankshaft gear tooth marked “O”. 4 Degree Advance: Use keyway and crankshaft tooth marked . Note: The or advanced position should not be used without degreeing the camshaft. Many camshafts have the proper advance built in. Advancing the cam will reduce intake valve to piston clearance and increase exhaust piston to valve clearance. 4 Degree Retard: Use keyway and crankshaft gear tooth marked . Note: The or retarded position should not be used without degreeing the camshaft. Many cams have the proper advance built in. Retarding the cam will reduce exhaust valve to piston clearance and increase intake piston to valve clearance. 3. Install your lower timing gear on the crankshaft making sure that the timing marks are facing out toward you. 4. Now that the lower timing gear has been installed check the timing mark alignment in your engine manual. Rotate the crankshaft using your crankshaft socket until the timing mark on the gear is in the proper position (12 o’clock). For 240-300 6 cyl. see Note 1 before proceeding! 5. If your engine is equipped with a camshaft retaining plate or thrust plate, it should be installed at this time. Note that many Ford thrust plates are marked “back – bottom”. Before final installation check to make sure that the thrust plate is fitted correctly. 351W owners see Note 2 before proceeding! 6. Temporarily install your camshaft timing gear and rotate the camshaft until the timing mark on the camshaft gear is in the proper position per your engine manual instructions (6 o’clock).

1. Remove the engine front cover. 2. Lower the vehicle. Caution: ^ This pulse wheel is used in several different engines. Install the pulse wheel with the keyway in the slot stamped 20-25-34Y-30M (Color Blue). 3. Remove the ignition pulse wheel. 4. Install the damper bolt. Note: ^ RH shown, LH similar. 5. Remove the LH and RH spark plugs. 6. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to position the crankshaft keyway in the 11 o’clock position and position the camshafts in the correct position. This will position the number one cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC). ^ Verify that the camshafts are correctly located. If not, rotate the crankshaft one additional turn and re-check. 7. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 120 degrees, to the 3 o’clock position to locate the RH camshafts in the neutral position. 8. Verify that the RH camshafts are in the neutral position. 9. Remove the RH timing chain and tensioner arm. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the tensioner. 3. Remove the tensioner arm. 10. Remove the bolts, RH timing chain guide and the timing chain. 11. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise 600 degrees (1-2/3 times) to position the crankshaft keyway in the 11 o’clock position. This will position the LH camshafts in the neutral position. 12. Verify that the LH camshafts are in the neutral position. 13. Remove the LH timing chain and tensioner arm. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the tensioner. 3. Remove the tensioner arm.
