1. Raise vehicle. CAUTION: Do not allow propshafts to hang at attached end. Damage to joint can result. 2. 3. 4. 5. Remove the front and rear propeller shafts. Refer to REMOVAL . Support transmission with jack stand. Remove rear crossmember and skid plate, if equipped. Disconnect transfer case vent hose (4). See Fig. 2. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Disconnect the wiring connector from the shift motor, if necessary. Support transfer case with transmission jack and secure with chains. Remove nuts (2) attaching transfer case (1) to transmission (3). Pull transfer case and jack rearward to disengage transfer case. Remove transfer case from under vehicle. DISASSEMBLY TRANSFER CASE-MP140 Position transfer case on shallow drain pan. Remove drain plug (2) and drain lubricant. 2. Using Holder C-3281 (1), remove the rear output flange nut. 3. Remove the rear output shaft flange (1) from the main shaft (2). If flange is difficult to remove by hand, remove it with bearing splitter, or with standard two jaw puller. Be sure puller tool is positioned securely on flange.

CAUTION: The three-way catalytic converter (5E212) is located beside the transfer case . Be careful when working around the three-way catalytic converter because of the extreme high temperatures generated by the three-way catalytic converter . 1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and position suitable safety stands under vehicle. 2. Remove skid plate from frame (5005) , if equipped. 3. Remove the damper from the transfer case , if equipped. NOTE: Drain transfer case only if transfer case disassembly is required. 4. Place a drain pan under the transfer case . Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid from the transfer case . CAUTION: Do not pull directly on the wires or pull outwardly on the locking tabs. 5. Remove the wire connector from the feed wire harness at the rear of the transfer case . First squeeze the locking tabs, then pull the connectors apart. Remove the connector for the motor from the mounting bracket. NOTE: For detailed instruction on front and rear driveshaft removal and installation, refer to Section 05-01. 6. Disconnect the front driveshaft from the case yoke (7B214) and wire the driveshaft out of the way. 7. Disconnect the rear driveshaft from the case yoke and wire the driveshaft out of the way. 8. Disconnect the speedometer drive gear (17285) from the transfer case rear case (7005) . 9. Disconnect the transfer case breather tube from the mounting bracket. 10. Support the transfer case with a suitable high lift transmission jack, such as Rotunda Number 077-00019 or equivalent.

REMOVAL 1. DISCHARGE REFRIGERANT FROM REFRIGERATION SYSTEM HINT : At the time of installation, please refer to the following item. Evacuate air from refrigeration system. Charge system with refrigerant and inspect for leakage of refrigerant. Specified amount: 600 ±50 g (21.16 ±1.76 oz.) 2. DISCONNECT LIQUID TUBE 5VZ-FE Shown a. Using SST, remove the piping clamp. SST 09870-00025 (Liquid tube) 1. Insert SST to piping clamp. HINT : Confirm the direction of the piping clamp claw and SST using the illustration showing on the caution label. 2. Push down SST and release the clamp lock. NOTE: Be careful not to deform the tubes, when pushing SST. 3. Pull SST slightly and push the release lever, then remove the piping clamp with SST. 4. Remove the piping clamp from SST. b. Disconnect the both tubes.

Removal All vehicles 1. Position the front wheels in a straight ahead position and centralize the steering wheel. Lock in position and remove the ignition key. 2. Detach the steering column. Remove and discard the steering column lower retaining bolt. 3. Loosen the shock absorber and spring assembly securing nuts. 4. Remove the right-hand front wheel and tire. 5. Remove the fender splash shield access panel. 7. Remove the muffler inlet pipe. Vehicles with automatic transmission 8. Remove the selector lever cable shield.
