Removal Procedure 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Remove the camshaft cover. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the #1 cylinder spark plug. Rotate the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction clockwise, until #1 piston is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Remove the engine front cover. Lower the vehicle. Important: The timing chain tensioner must be removed to unload chain tension before the timing chain is removed. If not removed, the timing chain will become cocked and it will be difficult to remove. 7. Remove the timing chain tensioner. 8. Remove the fixed timing chain guide access plug. 2002 Pontiac Grand AM L4-2.2L VIN F 9. Remove the fixed timing chain guide. 10. Remove the upper timing chain guide. 11. Use a 24 mm wrench to hold the camshafts from turning.

2. Remove the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement . 3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE . 4. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement . Fig. 68: Aligning Silver Link With Crankshaft Sprocket Mark 5. Rotate the engine until the crankshaft sprocket mark aligns with the second silver link (2) at the 5 o’clock position. 6. Lower the vehicle. 7. Remove the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement . Fig. 69: Aligning Copper Link To Intake Camshaft Sprocket 8. Ensure that the INT diamond on the intake camshaft sprocket is aligned with the copper link at (1) at the 2 o’clock position. Fig. 70: Aligning Silver Link With Exhaust Camshaft Sprocket 9. Ensure that the EXH triangle on the exhaust camshaft sprocket is aligned with the silver link (3).

Removal 1. Remove upper radiator crossmember. Disconnect fan assembly connector. Remove fan assembly. Remove drive belts. Using Crankshaft Pulley Holder (8191), hold crankshaft pulley and remove center bolt. Using a 3-jaw puller, remove crankshaft pulley. 2. Remove upper intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Remove electrical and vacuum harness retaining clips from valve cover studs. Remove ignition coils. Remove valve covers. Remove power steering pump and set aside. Remove drive belt tensioner pulley and bracket. Remove timing chain cover. Identifying Primary Timing Chain Aligning Marks Resetting Primary Chain Tensioner Plunger
