Some customers may comment on an engine tick noise. The distinguishing characteristic of this condition is that it likely will have been present since new, and is typically noticed within the first 161-322 km (100-200 mi). The noise may often be diagnosed as a collapsed lifter . Additionally, the noise may be present at cold start and appear to diminish and then return as the engine warms to operating temperature. This noise is different from other noises that may begin to occur at 3219-4828 km (2000-3000 mi). Cause The 0-ring seal between the oil pump screen and the oil pump may be cut, causing aeration of the oil. Correction Inspect the 0-ring seal and replace as necessary. Use the applicable part number listed below. Refer to the Engine Mechanical sub-section of the appropriate Service Manual.

ISSUE Some 2005-2010 Mustang vehicles built before 4/5/2009 and equipped with a 4.6L engine and manual transmission, may exhibit an oil-canning or exhaust rattle/buzz around 2000 – 2500 RPM during the first few minutes of driving after a cold start. The sound goes away after the car warms up. The concern may be caused by the separator plate, between the rear face of the engine block and the transmission housing, vibrating and/or contacting the flywheel. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Remove transmission per Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 308-03B. 2. Pry separator plate from the rear face of the block alignment dowels and slide it out from between block and flywheel. Replace with new service part. 3. Install transmission per WSM, Section 308-03B. NOTE INSTALL NEW SEPARATOR PLATE TO TRANSMISSION BOLTS IF MISSING OR DAMAGED. (FIGURE 1)

SYMPTOM In cold weather, the engine idles roughly after a cold start. The MIL may also come on with DTC P0107 (MAP sensor circuit low voltage) or DTC P0108 (MAP sensor circuit high voltage) set. PROBABLE CAUSE Moisture freezes inside the MAP sensor. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the MAP sensor. For Japan-built Civics, also replace the intake manifold. REPAIR PROCEDURE – ACCORD V6, ODYSSEY NOTE: Discard the instructions that came with the kit; they are incorrect for this repair. Follow this procedure instead. 1. Unplug the 3P connector from the MAP sensor. 2. Use a small, flat-tip screwdriver to pry out the retainer from the connector. Also, pry out the retainer from the new 3P connector. NEW 3P CONNECTOR OLD 3P CONNECTOR Remove these retainers. 3. Remove the No. 1 terminal (YEL/RED wire) from the old 3P connector. NO. 1 TERMINAL 4. Insert the No. 1 terminal (YEL/RED wire) into the left (No. 1) cavity of the new 3P connector. 8. Remove the MAP sensor and the O-ring from the throttle body (two washer-screws). Discard the sensor and the O-ring, but save the washer-screws. Transfer the No. 1 terminal NOTE: For 1998–99 Accord V6 models, discard the sensor spacer from the kit, and use P/N 16442-P8F-A21, H/C 6562896, instead. Also, discard the adapter harness bracket from the kit. This bracket cannot be mounted to the spacer on those models. 9. Position the new O-ring on the throttle body. Then install the sensor spacer with the washer-screws you saved in step 8.

The MIL is on with PGM-FI DTC P0507 stored, and/or the idle is slightly higher than expected when started cold. PROBABLE CAUSE The PCM software misinterprets inputs for the PGM-FI idle air control setting. CORRECTIVE ACTION Use the HDS to update the ECM/PCM PGM-FI software. SOFTWARE INFORMATION Accord: HDS software version 2.005.004 (or later) Element: HDS software version 2.005.008 (or later) REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Update the PGM-FI software (refer to Service Bulletin 01-023, Updating Control Units/Modules). 2. Verify the ECM/PCM PGM-FI software update repaired the vehicle by starting the engine and letting it idle for 3 minutes, then use the HDS to check the DTC P0507 in OBD STATUS. • In HDS, click on Honda Systems.

Customer Concern: Tests/Procedures: Potential Causes: Tech Tips: Has a misfire on start up only. Sets cylinder #1 misfire code P0301 and cylinder #4 misfire code P0304. Sets pending misfire code P1399 as well. The problem only lasts a few seconds. Suspecting headgasket since the coolant level is low and smells anti-freeze when the engine is started. 1. Check for evidence of anti-freeze on the spark plugs or in the cylinders. Pressure test the cooling system and check for anti-freeze going into the cylinders. 2. If not anti-freeze, check fuel pressure and see if it holds in case a fuel injector is leaking down. 3. If pulling the cylinder head to replace the headgasket, have the cylinder head sent out and checked for cracks. Cylinder Head Cylinder Head Gasket Fuel Injectors Cylinder head was cracked. Other causes of a misfire like spark plug wires and incorrect valve adjustment are common but those wouldn’t likely be a misfire for just a few seconds on cold start up.
