WARNING! Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap before working on electrical system, observing all cautions => Repair Manual; Electrical; Repair Group 27, Battery, disconnecting and reconnecting. Removing Note: Before disconnecting battery Ground (GND) strap obtain security code for radio with anti- theft coding. Remove driver’s airbag unit => page 69-50. Remove steering wheel => page 69-61. Note: For vehicles with steering angle sensor -G85- observe: => Suspension, Wheels, Steering; Repair Group 48 – Steering; Steering column, removing and installing; Sequence for vehicles with steering angle sensor -G85-. For vehicles without steering angle sensor -G85- observe: => Suspension, Wheels, Steering; Repair Group 48 – Steering; Steering column, removing and installing; For vehicles without steering angle sensor -G85-. Remove two screws -arrows-. Remove steering column switch upper trim -1-. Remove three screws -arrows-. Release steering wheel height adjustment -2-. Remove steering column switch lower trim-1-. Note: Handle for height adjustment can be removed (two screws) to ease removal of lower trim. Remove Hex socket (Allen key) head bolt -1-. Disconnect connectors -arrows- from steering column switches. Remove steering column switch. Remove screws -1-. Remove driver’s side footwell cover -2- from retainers -3-.

Vehicles with airbags, refer to Service Precautions Vehicles without airbag – Lift horn pad at bottom and pull from steering wheel in direction of arrow. – Remove horn wire. Fig. 2 Horn plate, removing – Remove wire connector from horn plate. – Disengage retaining lugs -arrows- and remove contact plate -A- from contact plate -B-. Note: The horn plate consists of two non insulated contact plates. Horn operates when the horn pad is pressed and plate -A- contacts plate -B- .

REMOVAL 1. Remove the covers over the heating/air-conditioning system, battery and fluid tank. Disconnect and remove the battery. 2. Remove the refrigerant by suction using the service unit. 3. Detach the air-conditioning lines at the expansion valve. Immediately close connections and lines with plugs so that they are air-tight. 4. Remove steering wheel and loosen steering column panel. Comply with safety regulations when handling airbag units (see SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR VEHICLES WITH AIRBAG AND BELT TENSIONER ). 5. Undo the central screw (clamp) on the steering column switch from below and pull it forwards slightly. Remove the cover at the top and disconnect the electrical plug connections. Remove the steering column switch.

Disconnect battery negative lead. Remove fixture for steering column switch. Remove center console. Remove trim for center console. Remove right glovebox. Remove all clip-fitted trims (on instrument panel). Remove carrier in center console. Remove both panels for front roof pillar. Remove light switch unit. Remove complete instrument carrier. Remove heating controls. If necessary, remove radio receiver. Remove airbag module on passenger side. If necessary, release screw (1).
