1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information. 2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels. 3. Remove the shock module yoke. Refer to Shock Module Yoke Replacement. 4. Remove the stabilizer shaft link lower retaining nut. 5. Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm. 6. Remove the ABS wire harness from the lower control arm. 7. Remove the lower control arm to steering knuckle nut. 8. Using the J 43631 , separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle. See Special Tools. IMPORTANT: Will need to raise the power steering gear to have clearance when removing the rear lower control arm to frame retaining bolt. 9. Loosen the power steering gear retaining bolts and raise the power steering gear. 10. Remove the lower control arm to cradle nuts. 11. Remove the lower control arm to cradle bolts. 12. Remove the lower control arm by lowering the lower control arm at the frame and moving the ball stud upwards. Installation Procedure

Removal 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel. Remove shock absorber. See LOWER CONTROL ARM & BALL JOINT . Remove hub grease cap. Remove ABS speed sensor and wire harness clamp from steering knuckle. Remove brakeline bracket from steering knuckle. Remove the bolt and separate the brake tube bracket from the steering knuckle. Using Special Tool (09023-00100), disconnect the brake tube from the front disc brake caliper assembly. Remove the bolt and separate the brake tube bracket from the steering knuckle. Remove the 2 bolts and front disc brake caliper assembly. Remove rotor. 2. On 4WD models, using a screwdriver and a hammer, remove the front axle hub grease cap. Remove the cotter pin and a lock cap. Remove the front axle hub nut. On all models, remove the nut and separate the stabilizer link assembly from the steering knuckle. Remove the cotter pin. Using Special Tool (09628- 62011), separate the tie rod end sub-assembly from the steering knuckle. 3. Remove 2 lower ball joint bolts, and disconnect lower ball joint. Remove upper ball joint, cotter pin and retaining nut. Using ball joint separator, separate upper ball joint from knuckle. On 4WD models, using a plastic hammer, separate the front axle hub from the front drive shaft. Remove the front axle hub sub- assembly. On all models, remove steering knuckle with hub. Installation To install, reverse removal procedure. Clean bolt threads. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Depress brake pedal several times. Check front wheel alignment. Ensure ABS speed sensor has a good signal.

NOTE: BALL JOINT CHECKING NOTE: See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT. Ball joint must be removed for the following checking procedure. See LOWER CONTROL ARM and BALL JOINTS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove ball joint and place in vise, with ball joint stud pointing upward. Flip stud back and forth about 5 times. Reinstall the ball joint nut. Place torque wrench on ball joint nut and turn nut continuously 1 turn every 2 to 4 seconds. Read torque measurement on 5th turn. See BALL JOINT TURNING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. If torque is not within specification, replace ball joint. WHEEL BEARING CHECKING NOTE: Wheel bearings are not adjustable. Whenever bearings are removed, replace with NEW bearings, races and oil seals. 1. Remove front wheel. Remove brake caliper and disc. Support caliper out of way. Using dial indicator placed near center of axle hub, check backlash by moving hub in bearing shaft direction. If backlash exceeds .002″ (.05 mm), replace bearing. 2. Check deviation at axle hub surface, outside of hub bolt by moving hub with twisting motion. If deviation is more than .002″ (.05 mm), replace bearing. Reinstall disc, brake caliper and front wheel. See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 .

Removal 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, raise and support the vehicle. 2. NOTE: Drain the transfer case if disassembly is required. Remove the drain plug and drain the transfer case. 3. Remove the skid plate, if equipped. 4. NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, index-mark the rear driveshaft. Remove the rear driveshaft. For additional information, refer to Section 205-01. 5. Remove the two nuts and the front driveshaft shield. 6. NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, index-mark the front driveshaft. Remove the front driveshaft. For additional information, refer to Section 205-01. 7. Make preliminary adjustment references. 1. Index-mark the torsion bars to the torsion bar crossmember. 2. Measure and record the torsion bar adjuster bolt length. 8. Remove the bolts. 9. Using the special tools, remove the torsion bar adjustment nuts. Tighten the special tool until the torsion bar adjuster lifts off the adjuster nut. 10. Remove the torsion bar adjusting brackets. 1. Move the torsion bars forward. 2. Remove the torsion bar adjusting brackets. 11. Pull the torsion bar rearward and separate it from the lower control arm. Remove the RH torsion bar only. 12. Remove the six bolts and the torsion bar crossmember.

Removal 1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 2. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly. 3. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the 6mm drive hole in the front stabilizer bar link ball stud, do not use an Allen wrench to break loose or tighten to final torque the front stabilizer bar link-to-front shock absorber nut. Remove the stabilizer bar link retaining nut and disconnect the link from the strut. 4. CAUTION: Do not allow the halfshaft to move outboard. Over extension of the CV joint may result in the separation of internal parts, causing failure of the joint. Remove the strut assembly-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt. If required, slightly spread the steering knuckle to ease the removal of the strut. Pry down on the lower control arm and roll the strut base out of the knuckle. Do not pry on the halfshaft, as damage may result. Wire the steering knuckle up to prevent the halfshaft from moving outboard. 5. Partially lower the vehicle. 6. Support the strut assembly and remove the top three mount-to-strut tower nuts. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle. 7. CAUTION: The strut assembly is under spring tension. Attempting to disassemble the strut without properly compressing the spring can result in injury. Using a suitable spring compressing tool, slightly compress the strut spring to relieve initial tension. Loosen the upper rod nut. Continue to compress the spring until the tension is relieved. Remove the upper rod nut. 8. Remove all upper mounting parts, coil spring, and coil spring isolators from the strut and save them for reassembly. Carefully note the position of each part during removal to ensure proper reassembly. Inspect each part for wear and damage as it is removed. Installation 1. CAUTION: The bearing and seal assembly is press-fit onto the upper mount. The mount washers must be installed in the correct orientation. NOTE: Be sure to check the spring insulator for damage before assembly. If the outer metal splash shield is bent or damaged, it must be carefully bent back, so it does not touch the locator on the bearing and seal assembly. NOTE: New gas struts are shipped with the rod in a locked down position. To extend the new strut, remove the external tie down and/or rotate the upper end of the rod, counterclockwise. Install the coil spring insulator, coil spring, and upper mounting parts to the new strut assembly. Make sure the spring is correctly seated in both spring seats.
