1. Thoroughly clean the transmission case and extension housing in solvent and blow dry with compressed air. 2. Inspect the transmission case for the following: 1. Stripped bolt hole threads. 2. Gasket and mating surfaces for burrs or nicks. 3. Obstructions to vent and fluid passages. Cracks or warpage. 3. Inspect the extension housing for cracks, burrs or warpage. 4. Inspect case bearing for damage. Replace as needed. 5. Remove the case bearing. 1. Install the Bearing Cup Puller with Slide Hammer into case bearing. 2. Remove the case bearing. Use an oil stone to remove any nicks or burrs in the bearing case bore. 6. Install a new case bearing. 1. Assemble and install the Drive Handle and Bearing Installer. 2. Position new case bearing onto bearing installer tool. 7. Tap case bearing into case bearing bore. 8. Install the A4LD Holding Fixure Adapter. 1. Position the A4LD Holding Fixture Adapter on the rear of the transmission case. 2. Install the A4LD Holding Fixture Adapter bolts. 9. Attach the fixture arm of the Bench Mounted Holding Fixture to the A4LD Holding Fixture Adapter. 10. Install transmission into Bench Mounted Holding Fixture. Rotate the transmission so that the fluid pan rail is facing up. -MOUNTED HOLDING FIXTURE IS SECURE. 11. Using Shift Lever Seal Replacer, install the manual control lever shaft seal. Lubricate the manual control lever shaft seal with petroleum jelly. 12. Assemble the manual valve inner lever and parking lever actuating rod as shown. 13. Install the manual control lever shaft. 14. NOTE: Align the manual control lever shaft alignment groove with the manual control lever shaft spring pin bore in the transmission case. Install the manual control lever shaft spring pin. Tap the manual control lever shaft spring pin into the transmission case. 15. Install the manual valve inner lever and parking lever actuating rod on to the manual control lever shaft. 16. Install the manual valve inner lever nut on the manual control lever shaft and tighten. 17. Install the output shaft thrust washer (No. 11). Coat the output shaft thrust washer with petroleum jelly. 18. Install the park gear.

1. NOTE: To prevent cable damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable assembly between the steering column shift tube bracket and the steering column bracket. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. 2. Carefully lift the locking tab and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column bracket. 2. Disconnect the cable push pin from the stud in the bulkhead. 3. Push the rubber grommet and transmission shift cable through the bulkhead. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 4R100 transmission 5. NOTE: To prevent shift cable assembly damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable between the manual control lever and the transmission shift cable bracket. Remove the transmission shift cable from the transmission. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Depress the lock tabs to release the transmission shift cable and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission shift cable bracket. 6. Remove the shift cable bracket from the transmission. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the shift cable bracket. 7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the shift cable. NOTE: If the transmission is to be removed for a period of time, support the engine with a safety stand and a wood block. 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 2. Place the selector lever in NEUTRAL position. 3. For vehicles equipped with a 4.0L SOHC engine, remove the fluid level indicator tube bolt from the heater hose bracket and remove the tube and indicator. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 5. If transmission disassembly is required; drain the transmission fluid. For additional information, refer to Fluid Pan, Gasket and Filter in this section. 6. Vehicles equipped with 4WD, remove the transfer case. For additional information, refer to Section 308-07B. 7. To maintain initial driveshaft balance, mark the driveshaft yoke and axle flange, so they can be installed in their original positions. 8. Remove the rear driveshaft. 1. Remove the four bolts. 2. Remove the driveshaft. 9. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Section 303-06. 10. NOTE: Mark the torque converter and the flexplate for correct alignment at reinstallation. Remove the four nuts. Rotate the flexplate to access all the nuts. 11. Disconnect the shift cable. 1. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Disconnect the shift cable from the bracket. 12. Remove the transmission wiring harness. 1. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connector. 2. Disconnect the transmission connector. 3. Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor connector. 4. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor connector. 13. Remove the three-way catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to Section 309-00. 14. CAUTION: Care should be taken not to damage the cooler lines. Hold the case fitting and remove the transmission cooler lines. 15. Remove the transmission nuts.

1. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive shift strategy. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Section 414-00. 2. Loosen the clamps and remove the air cleaner tube. 3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 303-04. 4. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 1. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector. 3. Disconnect the speed control electrical connector. 5. Remove the transmission selector cable from the bracket. 1. Disconnect the transmission selector cable end from the manual lever. 2. Push the lock tab and separate the transmission selector cable from the bracket. 3. Position the transmission selector cable out of the way. 6. Disconnect the wire harness from the bracket. 7. Remove the manual control lever. 8. Remove the hood. 9. Remove the wiper arm and pivot assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 501-00. 10. Remove the passenger compartment air intake box. 11. Remove the air intake tube. 12. Remove the front upper radiator shield. 13. Remove the hood latch and position aside.

For additional information, refer to Section 501-16. 10. Remove the front upper radiator shield. 11. Install the special tool. 12. Install the special tool. 13. Install the special tools. 14. Install the special tool. 15. Remove the bolt and the upper fluid filler tube. 16. Remove the clips. 17. Depress the tabs on the plastic insert retainer and remove the cooler line from fitting. 18. Remove the transaxle retaining bolts.
