IMPORTANT: When replacing a theft deterrent control module with an GM Service Parts Operation (SPO) Replacement Part, set up the control module prior to the 10-minute relearn procedure or the 30-minute relearn procedure. TOOLS REQUIRED Scan tool SET UP A NEW THEFT DETERRENT CONTROL MODULE Use this procedure only if replacing the theft deterrent control module with an GM SPO Replacement Part. 1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle. 2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 3. With a scan tool, select Setup New VTD Module in the Vehicle Theft Deterrent, Special Functions data list. 4. Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions. IMPORTANT: When replacing a theft deterrent control module with an GM SPO Replacement Part, the module will learn the keys immediately. The existing powertrain control module (PCM) must learn the new fuel continue password when you replace the theft deterrent control module. When replacing a PCM with a GM SPO Replacement Part, the new PCM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately after programming and upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received and a password is learned, perform the learn procedure to change this password again. A PCM which had been installed in another vehicle will have learned the fuel continue password of the other vehicle’s theft deterrent control module. Perform either the 10-minute relearn procedure or the 30-minute relearn procedure after programming to learn the fuel continue password of the current vehicle’s theft deterrent control modules. When performing either relearn procedure, all previously learned keys will be erased from the theft deterrent control module’s memory. Additional keys may be learned immediately after the first relearn

Do not connect battery trickle charger. Risk of Injurywhen performing diagnostic tests and repairs on components of the SRS system. Store both airbags and side airbags with opening surface pointing upward. Do not expose to temperatures above 100°C . Preliminary work: Diagnosis – Function Test. See: FT – Function Test Preparation for DTC Readout : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Review DTC Memory and Actual Values. Fuses OK. Battery voltage 11 – 14 V SRS MIL (A1e15) illuminates. Connect Hand-Held Tester (HHT) as per connection diagram and readout DTC memory. WARNING: Interrupt any electrical current from reaching the airbag unit. NOTE: As of 07/93, diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) can only be read out and erased using the Hand-Held Tester (HHT). Determine MB number of the SRS control module via HHT (See DTC Chart). The SRS control modules beginning with the number 000, the fault code 1 is valid. Those beginning with 001, the fault code 2 is valid. NOTE : When installing additional accessories, observe harness clearances near SRS sensor lines. Test equipment : Hand-Held Tester (HHT) (Available through the MBNA Standard Equipment Program.)

Some control modules don’t have a serial link. To read the fault code, you will have a to use a different method. Bridge pin A and B in the diagnostic connector Turn the ignition on Count flashes in the check engine lamp Translate them using the list below To erase the fault code disconnect the battery for 30 seconds Blink code interpretation The code read out always starts with “Code 12” repeated three times, the fault codes are flashed. All codes are repeated three times, the first digit is flashed with a space of 0.4 seconds, then there is a 1.2 second delay until the second digit is flashed. The delay between codes is 3.2 seconds. The sequence is ended by once again flashing of “Code 12” three times.
