NOTE: Vehicles may be equipped with an aluminum or a copper brass heater core. Use replacement cores made of copper brass. Always identify the type of core being replaced because there is a difference in the heater core to heater case seals. Having the correct seal is essential to provide satisfactory heater system performance. Identification can be made by looking at one of the core tubes after a hose has been removed. An aluminum core will have a gray colored tube. A copper brass core will have a brass colored tube. If the core is copper brass, the seal removed with the old core can be used with the new copper brass replacement core, providing it is not damaged during removal. If the core is aluminum, a new seal for the copper brass replacement core will be required. REMOVAL 1. Remove the instrument panel, refer to Body and Frame/Interior Trim/ Dash Board/Service and Repair/ See: Body and Frame/Interior Moulding / Trim/Dashboard / Instrument Panel/Service and Repair 2. Remove the evaporator case assembly, please refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Evaporator Case/Service and Repair/ See: Evaporator Case/Service and Repair NOTE: Whenever the evaporator case is removed, it will be necessary to replace the suction accumulator/drier. 3. Remove the vacuum source line from the heater core tube seal.

REMOVAL 1. Remove the heater-A/C housing from the vehicle. See: Housing Assembly HVAC/Service and Repair 2. Remove the foam gasket surrounding the core tubes. NOTE: Notice the orientation of the irregularly shaped gasket on the tubes. The gasket must be placed correctly to ensure proper sealing against the body during reinstallation. 3. Remove the screws and retainers that secure the heater core and tubes to the heater-A/C housing. 4. Remove the mode door actuator if necessary, for clearance to remove the core. 5. Lift the heater core straight up and out of the heater-A/C housing. 6. When replacing individual tubes, loosen and remove the round tube-to-core clamp, and pull tube from core. INSTALLATION 1. When installing individual tubes, insert tube into core ensuring that tube O-ring is seated in core and not pinched. Hold tube in seated position while installing the round tube-to-core clamp. NOTE: The round tube-to-heater-core clamp should be left loose enough to turn the tube in the core. Position the core in the housing, and then tighten the tube-to-heater-core clamp after orienting the tubes to the molded heater-A/C housing. 2. Lower the heater core into the heater-A/C housing. 3. Install the mode door actuator, if removed from housing for core removal. 4. Position the retainers over the heater core tubes. Install and tighten the screws that secure the heater core and retainers to the heater-A/C housing. Tighten the screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). NOTE: The grounding strap is to be attached to the lower heater core tube retainer. 5. Reinstall the heater-A/C housing to the vehicle.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE 1. Remove the instrument panel. See: Heater Core\Service and Repair 2. Drain the engine coolant. See: Engine, Cooling and Exhaust\Cooling System\Service and Repair 3. On vehicles with automatic climate control only, cut the outer layer of the A/C evaporator and blower module in order to access the service access cover. See: Blower Motor\Service and Repair 4. On vehicles with automatic climate control only, remove the service access cover mounting screws (1). 5. On vehicles with automatic climate control only, remove the service access cover (2). 6. On vehicles without automatic climate control, remove the blower motor resistor. IMPORTANT: Mark and use the same mounting bolts for the heater/vent module during the installation process. Other mounting bolts are longer and will obstruct the operation of the temperature door. 7. Remove the heat/vent module mounting bolt through the blower motor resistor or service access cover opening.
