REMOVAL POWER STEERING PUMP AND AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR BELT 1. Using a 17 mm wrench, rotate belt tensioner clockwise (Fig. 2) until belt can be removed from power steering pump pulley. Gently, release spring tension on tensioner. 2. Remove the drive belt (Fig. 3). CLEANING Clean all foreign debris from belt pulley grooves. The belt pulleys must be free of oil, grease, and coolants before installing the drive belt. INSPECTION Belt replacement under any or all of the following conditions is required: ^ Excessive wear ^ Frayed cords ^ Severe glazing Poly-V Belt system may develop minor cracks across the ribbed side (due to reverse bending). These minor cracks are considered normal and acceptable. Parallel cracks are not (Fig. 6). NOTE: Do not use any type of belt dressing or restorer on Poly-V Belts. INSTALLATION NOTE: When installing drive belt on the pulleys, make sure that belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with pulley grooves. NOTE: It is necessary to bleed the clutch hydraulic release system if the system has lost an excessive amount of fluid and air has been introduced into the circuit. Air in the system typically results in a spongy pedal feel, and/or improper clutch release. If air cannot be removed from the system using this procedure, it is necessary to replace BOTH the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder assemblies. From driver’s seat, actuate clutch pedal 60 – 100 times. Verify clutch operation/pedal feel. If pedal still feels spongy, or clutch does not fully disengage, excessive air is still trapped within the system. Perform the following procedure: 1. Verify fluid level in clutch master cylinder reservoir. Top off with DOT 3 brake fluid as necessary. 2. Raise vehicle on hoist. 3. 2.0L Models: Remove left lateral bending brace. 4. Remove clutch slave cylinder/damper assembly from the transaxle case (Fig. 5), but do not disconnect from the system. Allow the slave cylinder hang, making it the lowest part of the system. CAUTION: While slave cylinder is detached from the transaxle, DO NOT actuate the clutch master cylinder. Damage to the slave cylinder will result. 5. Depress slave cylinder pushrod until it bottoms and then release. Repeat this at least ten 10 times, forcing trapped air upwards and out of the system. 6. Re-install slave cylinder into position. 1.6L equipped models: Torque slave cylinder to case bolt to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) . 2.0L equipped models: Torque slave cylinder to case bolt to 19 Nm (168 inch lbs.) . Install and torque damper (if equipped) to case nuts to 24 Nm (215 inch lbs.) . 7. Lower vehicle.

1. Remove No. 1 spark plug. Using dial indicator, set number one cylinder to TDC of compression stroke. Remove access plug from top of timing belt cover. See Fig. 1 . Ensure timing mark on camshaft aligns with mark on rear cover. See Fig. 2 . 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove accessory drive belts. Raise vehicle and remove right inner splash shield. See Fig. 3 . Remove crankshaft damper bolt. Use gear puller to remove crankshaft damper. 3. Lower vehicle and place a jack under engine to support weight. Remove right engine mount. On Breeze and Stratus, remove generator (with wiring attached) and bracket, and secure out of way. On Neon, remove power steering pump with hoses attached, and secure out of way. On all models, remove right engine mount bracket from engine. See Fig. 4 . 4. Remove front timing belt cover. See Fig. 1 . Rotate crankshaft so that timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 2 . Loosen timing belt tensioner bolts. If reusing timing belt, mark arrow on belt to indicate direction of rotation. Remove timing belt and tensioner. DO NOT loosen, tighten, or remove tensioner pulley pivot bolt. Fig. 1: Exploded View Of Timing Belt & Components
