Model 170 (SLK32O only), Model Year 2002 and later Engine Control Unit Software Update The Flashware CD release 0004488102/0005 (refer to S-B-07.61/30) or any newer version contains a software update for the engine control unit for the following conditions. Please use only the latest flash CD for flashing. Note: Do not flash Model 230 (SL5OO) with chassis number lower than F029500. ME software with part no. 113 153 34 79 will not communicate with transmission control unit resulting in a no start condition. Note: Emissions are not exceeded under normal conditions. All M112/M113 Engines – Model 220/215 MY 2003 and later remaining models MY 2002 and later: ^ Lack of power under full acceleration and mid range and/or upper long-term adaption values drifting to lean. ^ Hesitation caused by “two-footed” driver, i.e. driver depresses accelerator and brake pedal at the same time as outlined in DTB # 302 dated May 29, 2001. After flashing the ECU will have part number as follows:

Remove 1 Remove cylinder head covers Air cleaner mounted on vehicle. Air cleaner positioned at engine side. 2 Position piston of cylinder 1 at 40 degrees after TDC NOTE: Rotate engine at crankshaft in direction of rotation until 40 degrees marking on belt pulley/vibration damper is aligned with marking on timing case cover. The grooves on the camshafts must be pointing toward the inner V. Engine must not be rotated backwards. 3 Remove chain tensioner (2) 4 Remove camshaft Hall sensor (1) 5 Detach camshaft sprocket, take off NOTE: Tie together camshaft sprocket and timing chain with cable strap (5). 6 Detach camshaft bearing bridge (4) NOTE: Observe slackening diagram! 7 Remove camshaft Install 8 Install camshaft NOTE: Pay attention to camshaft marking when installing camshaft. See Camshaft code number and assignment. Oil the bearing surfaces! Camshafts must not be replaced individually for tolerance reasons. Pay attention to the correct position of the cap on the front end of the camshaft. 9 Attach camshaft bearing bridge (4) NOTE: Observe tightening diagram. 10 Rotate camshaft into basic position 11 Fit on camshaft sprocket NOTE: Take off cable strap (5)!

Remove DANGER: Risk of explosion from hydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury to eyes and skin suffering caustic burns from battery electrolyte or from contact with damaged lead acid batteries. No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. 1 Disconnect ground cable of battery CAUTION: Do not connect quiescent current retention device otherwise this may cause damage to the control module. 2 Remove spark plugs NOTE: To ensure that the engine can be easily cranked when drawing in the timing chain, and to avoid the timing chain jumping across. Remove only once spark plug of each cylinder. 3 Remove cylinder head covers Air cleaner mounted on vehicle Air cleaner positioned at engine side 4.1 Remove fan shroud NOTE: Not Model 211.061/065/070, 230.475 4.2 Remove electric fan 5 Position engine to 40 degrees after TDC of first cylinder. NOTE: Engine must not be cranked backwards. The notches of the camshafts must point toward the inner V. It must be possible to easily insert the two locking plates. If this is not possible, Set the basic position of camshafts. The copper plates of the timing chain must be aligned with the scribe marks on the camshaft sprockets. Owing to the unevenly long paths of the timing chain it may be necessary to crank the engine as many as 14 times till the copper plates get aligned with the scribe marks on the camshaft sprockets. On vehicles equipped with an air pump, the combination valve must be unbolted before the right locking plate is inserted. Installation: Replace Gasket of combination valve. 6 Remove chain tensioner 7 Remove camshaft position sensor 8 Crank engine in direction of rotation until the link for separating the timing chain is easily accessible

Camshaft Removal The camshafts of this engine must be removed/installed with the utmost care. To avoid breaking of camshafts, the loosening and tightening specifications for camshaft bearing caps, as well as the basic setting of camshafts in relation to ignition TDC of cylinder no. 1, must be observed with critical attention. The following repair notes complement the Microfiche Repair Instructions, Engine 104, Mechanical, Group 05, job number 05-220 “Installing/removing camshafts”. Please refer to the microfiche together with this service information. Note :The camshafts must only be installed/removed in the basic position. Basic Position Piston of cylinder no. 1 at ignition TDC. The camshaft setting bores with 4 mm diameter (arrows) touch the upper edge of the cylinder head (both on the outside). Be sure the camshaft timing adjuster is in the retard position. (This is achieved by ensuring the engine is only rotated in the correct direction of rotation, never backwards, throughout the entire procedure) (Figure 1). Figure 2
