Description The Engine Cranks but Does Not Run diagnostic table assumes that the battery condition and the engine cranking speed are OK. If the battery condition and the cranking speed are not OK, refer to Diagnostic System Check – Engine Electrical in Engine Electrical for diagnosis. Make sure that there is adequate fuel in the fuel tanks. Diagnostic Aids • Check the duct work between the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the throttle body for air leaks. • A malfunctioning MAF sensor may cause a no start or a stall after start. If you suspect this, disconnect the MAF sensor. The powertrain control module (PCM) will default to the speed density in order to calculate the load and the air flow. If this corrects the condition and the connections are OK, replace the MAF sensor. If the steps above check OK, refer to Symptoms . Test Description The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table. 4. It may be necessary to connect a battery charger to the battery for this step. If the battery state of charge is low, the scan tool may reset during the cranking test. 5. This step tests the ignition relay for proper operation. The ignition relay supplies voltage to the injectors and the ignition coils. When the ignition relay is not operating properly, a no start condition occurs. If the test lamp does not illuminate, this indicates the ignition relay is not suppling a voltage to the fuses. 6. The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor is located above the starter. 7. The camshaft position (CMP) sensor is located at the rear of the engine behind the intake manifold. 8. The ignition feed circuit for the CMP and CKP sensors is internally connected within the PCM. A short to ground on either circuit will cause a no start condition. 10. The fuel cap may need to be removed in order to hear if the fuel pump is operating. 12. At this point the engine should start. Refer to Hard Start for further diagnosis.

Condition General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall involving certain 2001-03 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra model vehicles, equipped with a 4.3L V6 (RPO L35 – VIN W or RPO LU3 – VIN X) engine. The ignition distributor cap and rotor in these vehicles may corrode and cause ignition system failure. This condition may result in rough engine idle, misfire, stalls, engine cranks but does not run and/or illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). Correction Dealers are to inspect the distributor ignition ventilation holes and, if necessary, replace the distributor cap and rotor, remove the External Ignition Protection (EIP) vent screens and install a foam sleeve around the A/C accumulator line. Vehicles Involved Involved are certain 2001-03 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra model vehicles, equipped with a 4.3L V6 (RPO L35 – VIN W or RPO LU3 – VIN X) engine and built within these VIN breakpoints: Service Procedure 1. Raise the engine hood and inspect the ignition distributor ventilation holes, located in the base of the distributor, to see if the External Ignition Protection (EIP) screens are present. 2. If the EIP vent screens are present: • Remove the vent EIP screens using the procedure listed in Step 3. • Refer to the appropriate procedure in the Engine Controls sub-section of the applicable Service Manual and replace the distributor cap and rotor. 3. Remove the vent screens (1), located in the base of the distributor, by inserting a plastic- handled, long blade awl or pick (2) into each of the two airflow vent holes and popping out the screen. If there are no EIP vent screens in the airflow vent holes, check the vent holes for debris and clear as necessary before reassembling the distributor. 4. If the EIP vent screens are not present, the distributor cap and rotor do not require replacement. 5. Install the foam sleeve, P/N 15190971, around the section of the A/C accumulator line that is routed directly above the distributor. Cut a slit in the sleeve and secure it to the line using tie- straps. Do not install a new foam sleeve if a sleeve is already in place on the A/C accumulator line. 6. 2001-03 CALIFORNIA, 2003 MASSACHUSETTS & MAINE VEHICLES ONLY : Install a Recall Identification Label. Also, for California vehicles, complete a “Proof Of Correction” certificate upon recall completion.

IF YOU CONFIRM • After a ‘cold soak’,* the engine cranks (turns with starter), but does not start. *Cold soak: Engine has cooled down to ambient (outside) temperature, regardless of summer or winter seasonal variations. • The engine may start if it is cranked for an extended period (more than 5 seconds) or if the throttle is opened during cranking. • After starting and operating for a few minutes the engine runs normally. ACTIONS • Replace the starter motor. • Add 1 can of Nissan Fuel System Cleaner into the fuel tank. • Perform ECM Part Number Check to see if the vehicle you are working on needs ECM Reprogramming. • Perform ECM Reprogramming, if needed. SERVICE PROCEDURE Replace Starter, Add Cleaner 1. Replace the starter motor. • Use the part number from the Parts Information section of this bulletin. • Refer to section SC, “STARTING SYSTEM, Removal and Installation” in the applicable Nissan Electronic Service Manual (ESM). 2. Add one full can of Nissan In-Tank Fuel System Cleaner to the fuel. NOTE: If the fuel tank is less than ¾ full, instruct the customer to fill the tank as soon as it is convenient after the repair. Driving with the Cleaner installed and low fuel level will not harm the fuel system or engine, but will reduce the effectiveness of the cleaning process. 3. Continue to ECM Part Number Check (next page).
