DTC FOR VARIABLE VALVE TIMING CONTROL FUNCTION APPLIED VEHICLES: All 1997 – 2007 with Variable Valve Timing APPLIED ENGINES: VQ35; VH41, VK45; VK56 IF YOU CONFIRM The MIL is on with any of the following DTCs stored: P0011, P0014, P0021, P0024, P1110, P1135, NOTE: The engine may also have Camshaft Sprocket rattle noise and/or other engine noise. ACTION Do Not replace the variable valve timing Solenoid Valve or the Sprocket(s) without performing the complete diagnostics indicated in the EC section of the Service Manual. The first steps in the complete diagnostic is to make sure the: • Engine oil is at the operating level; add oil if needed. Refer to the Service Manual for low oil level diagnoses if needed. • Oil pressure is normal when measured with a gauge at the pressure switch port. Refer to the Service Manual for low oil pressure diagnoses if needed.

BACKGROUND The current routing of the engine drive belt creates extra force on the drive belt auto-tensioner. In rare cases, this extra force could break the auto-tensioner pivot bolt, causing an engine noise or a loss of power steering. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the auto-tensioner pivot bolt, and reroute the drive belt. On vehicles with A/C, install a new drive belt. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. From above the engine, set a long-handled, boxed- end wrench on the drive belt auto-tensioner. Slowly turn the wrench counterclockwise, then remove the drive belt. NOTE: On vehicles without A/C, the drive belt will be reused. 2. Insert a pulley holder (see REQUIRED SPECIAL TOOLS) into one of the holes in the water pump pulley at the 12 o’clock position. The tool holds the pulley so you can loosen or tighten the pulley bolts. WATER PUMP PULLEY 3. Remove the water pump pulley (three bolts). 4. Remove the pivot bolt from the drive belt auto- tensioner. NOTE: In rare cases, the pivot bolt may be broken. If this has happened, remove the auto-tensioner, then remove the shank of the pivot bolt with Vise Grips or by drilling it out. Do not try to repair the engine block using a TIME-SERT. If you can’t remove the shank of the pivot bolt, you would need DPSM approval to install an engine short block assembly.

For 2003 and 2004 Applied Vehicles: When you perform Procedure C (ECM Reprogramming), go to NTB06-051a for reprogramming information. You will still need to perform all other parts of this bulletin on 2003 and 2004 Applied Vehicles. INTRODUCTION Nissan has determined that some 2002-2003 model year Altima and 2002-2004 model year Sentra vehicles equipped with the 2.5 liter engine have defects that relate to motor vehicle safety. For 2002-2003 model year Altimas, there is a possibility that the exhaust pipe hanger pin may catch debris from the road that could be ignited by contact with the catalytic converter and cause a fire. In addition, for 2002-2003 model year Altimas and 2002-2004 model year Sentras, there is a possibility that certain engine operating conditions may cause damage to the pre-catalyst. Material from inside a damaged pre-catalyst could enter the engine and result in increased oil consumption. If the engine oil level is not checked on a periodic basis and drops below the low level, and the driver continues to operate the vehicle ignoring noticeable engine noise, engine damage may occur which could result in a fire.

2004-2009 Mazda3 2006-2009 Mazda5 2003-2008 Mazda6 with L3 Engine 2006-2009 MX-5 DESCRIPTION This bulletin provides guidelines for repairing internal engine noise issues (such as Knocking, Ticking, Tapping, Rattling, Grinding, Squealing, Squeaking, Thumping, Whining, Creaking, Popping, Clicking, Roaring, Loud, High-pitched etc). When engine replacement is necessary, use short block or long block according to following guideline. Do not replace long block assembly if short block assembly or cylinder head assembly will resolve concern. Guideline for Short Engine/Cylinder Head Replacement SERVICE POINTS TO DETERMINE PARTS REUSEABILITY 1. Cylinder Head Check for contact mark between the cylinder head (A) and piston (B). Check for carbon peeling or valve to piston interference. – If OK, flush cylinder head (with valves assembled) with kerosene and blow oil passages with regulated shop air. – If no good, contact MASH for authorization to replace cylinder head assembly and related damaged components.

ENGINE – 4.0L OHV – CARBON KNOCK ON ACCELERATION NOISE – CARBON KNOCK ON ACCELERATION – VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4.0L OHV ENGINE ONLY FORD: 1990-1997 AEROSTAR 1990-2000 EXPLORER, RANGER ISSUE Some vehicles equipped with the 4.0L OHV engine may exhibit an engine noise which may be perceived by the customer as a piston/connecting rod bearing knock. This carbon knock is heard only under load during the drive cycle. Carbon knock is a customer drive duty-cycle phenomenon that cannot be repaired with an engine exchange. This may be caused by carbon build-up within the combustion chamber. ACTION Verify condition. If normal diagnostics fail to correct the condition, de-carbon the combustion chamber to help quiet the carbon knock noise. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details. SERVICE PROCEDURE Use Motorcraft Carburetor Tune-up Cleaner PM-3. Carbon removal: a. Disconnect canister purge line from throttle body. b. Attach a vacuum line to the canister purge port. c. At hot engine idle, allow the engine to ingest 1/2 to 2/3 of a can of Motorcraft Carburetor Tune-up Cleaner. Use caution not to ingest too quickly due to potential hydro-lock issues. d Shut engine off and allow it to soak for one hour. e. Start engine, allow engine to ingest the remainder of the Motorcraft Carburetor Tune-up Gleaner. f. Remove vacuum line and re-install canister purge line. g. Road test vehicle at 3500 RPM for 2-3 miles. h. Repeat above procedure two times for a total of three times. i. Change oil and filter.
