1. Loosen the air cleaner outlet tube clamp at the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and remove tube. 2. Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector. 3. Remove the engine air cleaner cover. 1 Unclip the two bail clamps. 2 Remove the engine air cleaner cover. 4. Remove the Air Cleaner element (ACL element). 1998 Ford Truck Explorer 2WD V6-245 4.0L VIN X SFI 5. Remove the lower air cleaner assembly. INSTALLATION 1. Follow the removal procedure in reverse order.

1. Remove the sail panel. NOTE: Release the top portion first. 2. Remove the window regulator switch plate. 3. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 4. Remove the top door trim panel screw. 2001 Ford Truck Expedition 2WD V8-4.6L SOHC VIN W 5. Remove the door trim panel screw at the window regulator switch plate opening. 6. Remove the door trim panel screw in the courtesy lamp housing. 1 Remove the courtesy lamp lens. 2 Remove the screw. 7. Release the inside door handle trim cover. ^ Pull the inside door handle outward. ^ Release the trim cover. 8. Remove the inside door handle. ^ Remove the bolt.9. Lift upward and then outward to remove the front door trim panel. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the front door trim panel, do not pull directly outward. 10. Remove the courtesy lamp. ^ Turn the courtesy lamp bulb socket one-quarter of a turn and remove. 11. Disconnect the power mirror electrical connector. INSTALLATION

NOTE: High series shown, low series similar. NOTE: The window must be completely down to remove the front door trim panel. 1. On high series front door trim panel, disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Remove the screws. 3. Remove the inside door handle cup. 4. On low series front door trim panel, remove the screw and the window regulator handle. 1997 Ford Truck Explorer 2WD V6-245 4.0L VIN X SFI 5. Start in a lower corner and work around the panel, carefully prying the front door trim panel away from the front door to disengage the pushpins. 6. Lift the front door trim panel to disengage the top lip from the weatherstrip. 7. Turn the front door trim panel over. 1997 Ford Truck Explorer 2WD V6-245 4.0L VIN X SFI 8. Disconnect the power window switch and the power door lock switch electrical connectors. a. Remove the screws. b. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 9. If equipped, remove the courtesy lamp bulb from the lens and remove the front door trim panel. Installation 1. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to relearn the strategy. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

All vehicles 1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 2. If the vehicle is equipped with an inline transmission fluid filter, remove and discard the filter. Vehicles Equipped With A Fluid Pan Drain Plug 3. Remove the drain plug and allow the fluid to drain. 4. NOTE: Do not discard the gasket unless damaged. This is a reusable gasket. Remove the transmission fluid pan and the gasket. Vehicles Not Equipped With A Fluid Pan Drain Plug 2001 Ford Truck Expedition 4WD V8-5.4L SOHC VIN L 5. NOTE: Do not discard the fluid pan gasket unless damaged. This is a reusable gasket. Remove the transmission fluid pan and gasket. 1 Loosen, but do not remove the bolts. 2 Remove the front and side bolts. 3 Lower the front of the fluid pan and allow the fluid to drain. 4 Remove the remaining fluid pan bolts and the fluid pan. All vehicles 6. CAUTION: When installing a new transmission fluid filter and seal assembly, the torque converter should be drained. Transmission cooler, cooler lines, and cooler bypass valve must be thoroughly flushed to remove any contamination. NOTE: After removal, discard the filter and seal assembly. Remove the filter and seal assembly by carefully pulling and rotating the filter as necessary. 7. CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch or damage the aluminum bore. The new seal may leak and damage to the case will result. If the seal remains in the pump bore, remove it carefully with a small screwdriver so as not to scratch or damage the aluminum bore.

There are four carriage bolts which pass through holes in the instrument panel, located around the edges of a large cutout in the panel. This cutout is and opening between the heater blower housing assembly on the engine compartment side of the instrument panel and the evaporator core when air conditioning is provided as an option. This evaporator housing assembly includes other components which are common to heating and air conditioning-heating systems, on the passenger compartment side of the panel. Nut and washer assemblies draw the two major components together through their gaskets at the instrument panel. REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION 1. Drain cooling system. 2. Remove the heater water hoses from the heater core in the engine compartment and plug hoses. 3. Remove modesty panel which runs along the lower edge of the instrument panel (04320). 4. Remove the six screws from the heater core cover (18B300) Fig. 7. located on both sides of the heater assembly case. 5. Remove heater core cover. 6. Remove heater core and heater core case seal (18658) from the heater assembly. 7. Reverse procedure to install, refill cooling system.
