1. Remove the front disc brake caliper anchor plate. 2. On 4×4 vehicles, remove the brake disc. 3. On 4×2 vehicles, remove the brake disc and hub as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Remove the hub grease cap. Remove the cotter pin. Remove the nut retainer. Remove the spindle nut. Remove the front wheel outer bearing retainer washer. Remove the outer front wheel bearing. Remove the brake disc and hub. 4. If necessary on 4×2 vehicles, remove the front wheel bearing. 1. Remove the wheel hub grease seal. 2. Remove the front wheel bearing. Installation 1. On 4×4 vehicles, position the brake disc to the wheel hub. Use Metal Brake Parts Cleaner F3AZ-19579-SA or equivalent to clean the brake disc and hub. On 4×2 vehicles, thoroughly clean and inspect the front wheel bearings and the brake disc and hub. Use Metal Brake Parts Cleaner F3AZ-19579-SA or equivalent. 3. On 4×2 vehicles, lubricate the front wheel bearings. Use Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or-K or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION AUTOMATIC LOCKING HUBS MANUAL LOCKING HUBS Removal 3. Using magnet, remove locking key from spindle keyway. It may be necessary to rotate adjusting nut slightly to relieve pressure for locking key removal. Loosen adjusting nut with 2 3/8″ Hex Socket (T70T- 4252-B). 4. Tighten adjusting nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 N.m) while turning hub back and forth to seat bearings. Spin hub and back off adjusting nut 90 degrees. Retighten adjusting nut to 16 INCH lbs. (1.8 N.m). 5. Align nearest hole in adjusting nut with center of spindle keyway slot. If necessary, advance nut to next lug. Install locking key in spindle keyway under adjusting nut. Install 2 thrust washers. Press plastic cam assembly onto adjusting nut while lining up key in fixed cam with spindle keyway.

2WD MODELS 1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. 2. Remove the wheels. 3. Remove the caliper without disconnecting the brake line. Suspend it out of the way using a piece of wire to prevent damage. See Section 9 for additional service information.
CAUTION Brake linings may contain asbestos. Asbestos is a known cancer-causing agent. When working on brakes, remember that the dust which accumulates on the brake parts may contain asbestos. Always wear a protective face covering, such as a painter’s mask, when working on the brakes. NEVER blow the dust from the brakes or drum! There are solvents made for the purpose cleaning brake parts. Use them! 4. Remove the grease cap, cotter pin, nut cap, nut, and washer from the spindle. Discard the cotter
