SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Raise the vehicle off the ground with a vehicle hoist. 2. Remove the right rear wheel. 3. Remove 2 bolts from the fuel filler tube bracket. 4. Remove the plastic cover (4 clips). 5. Unhook the fuel filler tube bracket from the body. 6. Unclip the recirculation tube. 7. Apply auto body painting tape to the top and rear of the wheel opening as shown. NOTE: This tape will protect the paint during the procedure. 8. Use a protective cloth to cover the items shown in Figure 6. 9. Remove the fuel filler cap and install a spare fuel fill cap. NOTE: If a spare fuel filler cap is not available, disconnect the tether and leave the original cap in place. 10. Hold the fuel filler tube with both hands and carefully pull the flange loose from the fuel door opening. WARNING: Make sure the fuel filler cap is installed and tight. If the fuel filler cap is not installed and tight, fuel may leak from the fuel filler tube when it is lowered. 11. Carefully pull down on the fuel filler tube and then pull the top of the tube from the wheel well (see Figure 8). • Do not scratch or chip the fuel filler tube paint. • Do not pull, stretch, or stress the fuel filler rubber tube. 12. Rest the fuel filler tube on the brake drum. WARNING: Do not remove the fuel fuller cap with the fuel filler tube in this position. Fuel may leak from the fuel filler tube. 13. Thoroughly clean the following with isopropyl alcohol: • Flange • Fuel filler tube, 6 inches from the flange • Recirculation tube, 6 inches from the flange

Some 2005-2008 Escape, Escape Hybrid, Mariner and 2006-2008 Mariner Hybrid vehicles may exhibit a slow fuel fill concern or a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0451 present. The condition may be caused by water/moisture or other contamination entering the fuel filler vent line and then freezing and/or causing a blockage. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition by relocating the fuel filler vent line. SERVICE PROCEDURE When performing this procedure it is not necessary to: • Drain any fuel from the tank • Remove the stone shield from the filler pipe • Disconnect the filler pipe from the fuel tank NOTE ANY WATER/MOISTURE OR OBSTRUCTIONS IN THE EVAPORATIVE VENT SYSTEM MUST BE REMOVED. 1. With the vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist. 2. Remove the left rear wheel. 3. Remove the fuel filler cap. 4. Remove the two (2) upper filler pipe mounting screws. 5. Remove the single lower filler pipe mounting screw. 6. Carefully pull the upper end of the filler pipe away from the inner wheel well to gain access to the vent line.

IMPORTANT: Inspect the fuel tank internally and clean the fuel tank if you find a restricted fuel filter. 1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure. 2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle. 3. Clean all the fuel filter connections and the surrounding areas before disconnecting the fuel pipes in order to avoid possible contamination of the fuel system. 4. Disconnect the threaded fittings (1, 2) from the fuel filter. 5. Remove the fuel filter bracket bolt (4). 6. Cap the fuel pipes in order to prevent possible fuel system contamination. 7. Slide the fuel filter from the bracket. 8. Inspect the fuel pipe O-rings for cuts, nicks, swelling, or distortion. Replace the O-rings if necessary. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1. Slide the fuel filter into the bracket. 2. Remove the caps from the fuel pipes. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 3. Connect the threaded fittings (1, 2) to the fuel filter. Tighten ^ Tighten the fittings to 25 N.m (18 lb ft)Tighten the fuel filter bracket bolt (4), to 12 N.m (106 lb in). 4. Lower the vehicle. 5. Tighten the fuel filler cap. 6. Connect the negative battery cable. 7. Use the following procedure in order to Inspect for leaks. 7.1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF, for 2 seconds. 7.2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds. 7.3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 7.4. Inspect for fuel leaks. 7.5. Install the engine sight shield

Connect gauge between fuel pipe and fuel distribution manifold, use hose 5116 and nipple 5265, Plug open end of hose with 5266. Turn gauge cock to position 1, pointing toward hose 5116. B13 Check Function Of Fuel Pump And Tank Pump Pressure sensor is located next to expansion tank in engine compartment. Disconnect connector from sensor. Turn on ignition. Connect wire (in connector) from relay to ground. (Note: both wires are yellow/black, check which one is ground). Fuel pumps should start and be clearly heard. B14 Check Tank Pump Unscrew fuel filler cap and listen. It is also possible to connect an ammeter between the fuse and pump wiring. 740 1985-on: fuse 11 760 up to 1987: fuse 11 760 1988/89: fuse 11/30 Current consumption: 1-2 A. If neither pump operates: Turn off ignition.

WARNING: Observe fire safety precautions. 1. Disconnect the NEG. battery cable and insulate. 2. Remove the fuel filler cap and draw out all fuel. NOTE: The fuel tank capacity is approx. 24 gals. (90 liters). Fuel Tank View 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Remove the fuel filler neck cup seal (60/1). Remove the fuel tank partition wall at the front of the trunk. Detach the fuel gauge sending unit electrical connector. Disconnect the fuel supply line (69) and the return line (70). Detach the vent valve (51). Unscrew tank fasteners (50/3) Remove the fuel tank strainer (68) and clean Throughly. Lift out the fuel tank. NOTE: If the fuel tank is being replaced transfer the stick-on packings, the soundproofing strips and the fuel gauge sending unit to the new tank (note the correct position before removing). 11. Reinstall the fuel tank in reverse manner. NOTE: a. Renew seals (70/1) and (68/1). b. c. d. e. Verify that seals (71, 72) are correctly fitted. Torque the fuel supply line (69) to approx. 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). Torque the fuel return line (70) to approx. 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Torque the fasteners (50/3) to approx. 15.5 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Make sure washers (50/2) are in place. f. Torque the fuel strainer to approx. 28.5 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
