Tools Required J 38185 Hose Clamp Pliers Removal Procedure 1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield (3.8L only). Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L. 2. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling. 3. UseJ 38185 in order to position aside the heater hose inlet and outlet clamps at the heater core. 4. Disconnect the inlet and outlet heater hose from the heater core. 5. Remove the vacuum tank. Refer to Vacuum Tank Replacement in HVAC System – Manual. 6. Remove the floor carpet. Refer to Front Floor Panel Carpet Replacement in Interior Trim. 7. Remove the rear floor air outlet duct from the holes in the floor reinforcement. 8. Disconnect the rear floor air outlet duct from the heater core outlet cover. 9. Remove the bolts from the vaccum harness bracket and position bracket aside. Important: Position the heater core outlet cover downward and rearward in order to disconnect the cover from the rear area floor duct assembly. 10. Remove the heater core outlet cover screws. 11. Remove the heater core outlet cover. 12. Remove the heater core cover screws. 13. Remove the heater core cover. 14. Remove and discard the seals (1,2) from the heater core cover. 15. Remove the caulk (3) from the heater core cover. 16. Remove and discard the heater core outer seal (5) from the heater core. 17. Remove the heater core clamp screw (1). 18. Remove the heater core retaining clamp. 19. Remove the heater core pipe retainer clamp screw (2). 20. Remove the heater core from the HVAC lower case. 21. Remove the heater core pipe retainer clamp from the heater core pipes. 22. Remove and discard the heater core lower seal (4) from the HVAC case. 23. Remove and discard the heater core center seal (3) from the HVAC case. 24. Remove and discard the heater core upper seal (2) from the HVAC lower case. 25. Remove and discard the heater core side seals (1) from the HVAC lower case. Installation Procedure

Special Tool(s) Engine Lift Bar 303-F047 (014-00073) Heater Hose Disconnect Tool 5/8 Inch 412-042 (T85T-18539-AH) Removal 1. Evaluate the A/C system. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00. 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 3. Remove the hood (16612). 4. Remove the engine air cleaner. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12. 5. Remove the radiator. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03. 6. Disconnect the climate control vacuum feed connector. 7. Position aside the power steering reservoir. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02. 8. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold—Variable Resonance Induction System in this section. 9. Remove the splash shield covering the engine main harness connectors. 10. Disconnect the two starter cable leads from the starter relay. 11. Disconnect the two 42-pin connectors and the single pin connector. 12. Disconnect the 16-pin connector and the single pin connector. 13. Remove the bolts and the junction block bracket. 14. Remove the heater water hoses from the heater core. 15. On 4.6L engines, disconnect the following electrical connectors. LH ignition coil connector (A). Camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector (B). Radio capacitor electrical connector (C). 16. On 4.6L engines, disconnect the following electrical connectors. RH ignition coil connector (A). Radio capacitor electrical connector (B). 17. On 4.6L engines, remove the ignition coils and ignition coil mounting brackets. 1. Remove the RH bolts. 2. Remove the RH ignition coil and bracket. 3. Remove the LH bolt. 4. Remove the LH nuts. 5. remove the LH ignition coil and bracket. 18. Remove the lower radiator hose and retaining bracket from the engine. 19. Remove the transmission oil filler tube if equipped. For additional information, refer to Section 307-01A (4R70W), or Section 307-01B (4R100). 20. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 21. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil. 22. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connection if equipped. 23. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. 24. Remove the starter motor (11001). For additional information, refer to Section 303-06. 25. Remove the A/C compressor if equipped. For additional information, refer to Section 412-03A. 26. Remove the transmission fluid cooler hose (7B093) from the block-mounted clip, if equipped. 27. Position the shift cable and bracket aside. 1. Disconnect the shift cable. 2. Remove the fasteners and position the bracket and shift cable aside. 28. Remove the bolts and the flexplate inspection cover. 29. Remove the cylinder block opening cover. 30. Remove the torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Discard the nuts. 31. NOTE: The upper two transmission-to-engine bolts will be removed later. Remove the lower five transmission-to-engine bolts. 32. On 4×4 vehicles, loosen the bolt and position the oil cooler aside.

NOTE: If the transmission is to be removed for a period of time, support the engine with a safety stand and a wood block. 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 2. Place the selector lever in NEUTRAL position. 3. For vehicles equipped with a 4.0L SOHC engine, remove the fluid level indicator tube bolt from the heater hose bracket and remove the tube and indicator. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 5. If transmission disassembly is required; drain the transmission fluid. For additional information, refer to Fluid Pan, Gasket and Filter in this section. 6. Vehicles equipped with 4WD, remove the transfer case. For additional information, refer to Section 308-07B. 7. To maintain initial driveshaft balance, mark the driveshaft yoke and axle flange, so they can be installed in their original positions. 8. Remove the rear driveshaft. 1. Remove the four bolts. 2. Remove the driveshaft. 9. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Section 303-06. 10. NOTE: Mark the torque converter and the flexplate for correct alignment at reinstallation. Remove the four nuts. Rotate the flexplate to access all the nuts. 11. Disconnect the shift cable. 1. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Disconnect the shift cable from the bracket. 12. Remove the transmission wiring harness. 1. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connector. 2. Disconnect the transmission connector. 3. Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor connector. 4. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor connector. 13. Remove the three-way catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to Section 309-00. 14. CAUTION: Care should be taken not to damage the cooler lines. Hold the case fitting and remove the transmission cooler lines. 15. Remove the transmission nuts.

NOTE: New O-ring seals must be installed before reconnecting any A/C fitting that has been disconnected. NOTE: Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system, except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator. NOTE: If an evaporator core leak is suspected, the evaporator core must be vacuum leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. 1. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging in this section. 2. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03. 3. Remove the instrument panel. For additional information, refer to Section 501-01. 4. Remove the engine appearance cover. 5. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustrations and tables. To remove individual parts, only carry out the 6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-00. 2. Remove the hood. 3. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold in this section. 4. Remove the accessory drive belt. 5. Discharge and recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00. 6. Remove the radiator. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03. 7. Remove the powertrain control module (PCM) and the support bracket. For additional information, refer to Section 303-04B. 8. Remove the cowl panel grille. For additional information, refer to Section 501-00. 9. Detach the wiring harness and the windshield washer hose retainers from the cowl panel extension. 11. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the bolt and the ground strap. 12. Disconnect the heater hose. 13. Disconnect the RH heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector and detach the wiring harness retainer. 14. Remove the nut, disconnect the A/C manifold and tube assembly and position aside. 15. Remove the nut and the A/C manifold and tube assembly and support bracket. 16. Remove the nuts, the transmission cooler tube and the power steering pressure tube support brackets. 17. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector. 18. Disconnect the coolant hose. 19. Remove the bolts and position the power steering reservoir assembly aside. 20. Using the special tool, remove the power steering pump pulley. 21. NOTE: Power steering lines shown disconnected for clarity. Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump aside. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the pump assembly.
