The transmission solenoid/TRS assembly is internal to the transmission and mounted on the valve body assembly. The assembly consists of six solenoids that control hydraulic pressure to the six friction elements (transmission clutches), and the torque converter clutch. The pressure control solenoid is located on the side of the solenoid/TRS assembly. The solenoid/TRS assembly also contains five pressure switches that feed information to the TCM. OPERATION SOLENOIDS Solenoids are used to control the L/R, 2C, 4C, OD, and UD friction elements. The reverse clutch is controlled by line pressure and the position of the manual valve in the valve body. All the solenoids are contained within the Solenoid and Pressure Switch Assembly. The solenoid and pressure switch assembly contains one additional solenoid, Multi-Select (MS), which serves primarily to provide 2nd and 3rd gear limp-in operation. The solenoids receive electrical power from the Transmission Control Relay through a single wire. The TCM energizes or operates the solenoids individually by grounding the return wire of the solenoid as necessary. When a solenoid is energized, the solenoid valve shifts, and a fluid passage is opened or closed (vented or applied), depending on its default operating state. The result is an apply or release of a frictional element. The MS and UD solenoids are normally applied to allow transmission limp-in in the

The hydraulic pressure from the dual master cylinder is split diagonally between the right front/left rear and left front/right rear wheel brake circuits, providing a balanced braking response should a malfunction occur in a brake line. The proportioning valve function is produced by the Electronic Brake Proportioning System (EBP). EBP dynamically adjusts the application of hydraulic pressure to the rear brakes. Both front and rear brakes are disc type with single piston floating calipers. The front discs are internally ventilated while the rear discs are solid. To ensure better ventilation of the brakes, additional openings for cooling air have been integrated into the bumper. The parking brakes are drum type with the drum located in the hub area of the rear disc. The self adjusting brake mechanism is like the W140 and is located under the passenger compartment second seat row. Component Location 4-ETS/ABS Hydraulic Unit

See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in GENERAL INFORMATION. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) control module senses reductions in front and rear wheel speed and modulates hydraulic pressure to the brakes to prevent wheel lock-up. The ABS consists of a hydraulic unit, 4 wheel speed sensors and sensor rotors, ABS relay (fail-safe relay and motor relay), pump motor and ABS control module. See Fig. 1. An ABS warning light is located on the instrument cluster. For more information on brake system, see BRAKE SYSTEM article. Cadillac DeVille Concours, Eldorado & Seville Oldsmobile Aurora The 4T80-E transaxle uses 2 electric solenoids to control transaxle upshifts and downshifts. Each solenoid is turned on or off by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM also includes on-board self-diagnostics. This helps identify which parts or circuits may need further testing. Each solenoid either holds hydraulic pressure (solenoid on) or releases hydraulic pressure (solenoid off). This action controls the shift valves inside valve body. By switching one or both solenoids on or off, different combinations of clutches, sprags and bands are operated. See CLUTCH & BAND APPLICATION CHART (4T80-E) under COMPONENT DESCRIPTION.
