The in-line fuel filters fitted to fuel delivery modules in Freelander 2.5-liter KV6 gasoline vehicles may be manufactured away from specification. The fuel filters may contain an uncontrolled amount of the adhesive used to bond the filter paper to the filter casing; the adhesive may not have been adequately cured; or the fuel pump inlet stub pipe hole on the fuel filter may have inadequate dimensional controls. In any of these cases, it is possible for these conditions to prevent adequate fuel flow through either restrictions in the filter or cracking of the pump stub pipe. This leads to increased pump motor use to maintain the required engine-demanded fuel and premature wear of the fuel pump motor brushes. In the event of restricted fuel flow, the vehicle may suffer one or more of the following symptoms: rough running and malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illumination; poor / no start; engine stumble or hesitation; or engine cut-out / stall with the possibility of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0171, P0174, or P0316 stored. Action: Refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below to replace the fuel pump module. CAUTION: A Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during IDS diagnosis / module programming. 4. Connect the Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply to the vehicle battery. CAUTION: IDS with T4 software DRG TL 36 5. Connect T4 to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session. 6. Select ‘System Diagnostics’. 7. Enter ‘Make and MY’ and correct VIN for the current vehicle. NOTE: Any DTCs not listed in step 3 are to be investigated / repaired as a separate repair. 8. Select ‘Fault Code Diagnostics’. 9. Read and clear stored fault codes. 10. Exit the current session when the task is completed. 11. Disconnect T4 and the Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Battery Supply from the vehicle. [NEW] REPLACE FUEL PUMP MODULE – 2002MY WARNING: Place the vehicle in a well ventilated, quarantined area and arrange ‘No Smoking / Petrol Fumes’ signs about the vehicle.

Some 2006-2007 Freestar and Monterey vehicles may experience a melted or damaged spark plug electrode, malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) P030X, rough idle, engine knock/ping on acceleration. Pre-ignition (which yields these symptoms) may be caused by water entering the powertrain control module (PCM). ACTION: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Remove PCM from vehicle. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-14. 2. Remove the PCM cover by carefully bending back the four (4) retaining clips holding the galvanized metal cover to the top plate. (Figure 1) Figure 1 – Article 07-14-1 3. Look for evidence of water within the PCM (liquid water, rust, water stains or deposits). (Figure 2) If found – obtain a replacement PCM before continuing on to Step 4. If no water is found, continue on to step 4 with the vehicle’s original PCM. Figure 2 – Article 07-14-1 4. Set the PCM top plate in a clean, dry location where the circuitry will be protected from damage. 5. With the PCM cover removed, drill a 1/4″ hole on each of the four (4) corners of the PCM cover. Get as close to the corner as possible. (Figure 3) Figure 3 – Article 07-14-1 6. De-burr the edges on both inside and outside surfaces. (Figure 3) Be sure to vacuum off all chips and wipe off all metal dust and any machining oil. 7. Clean the surfaces of the PCM cover with Motorcraft ZC-21 (Metal Surface Cleaner) or equivalent. Also clean the edges of the PCM top plate. The metal surfaces must be completely clean before proceeding to Step 8. 8. Apply Motorcraft TA-29 Ultra Silicone Sealant to all edges depicted. (Figure 4, 5, 6, 7) Proceed directly to Step 9 – do not let the sealant skin over. NOTE: Motorcraft TA-32 can NOT be used since its constituents may damage the PCM circuitry.

ISSUE Some 2001-2003 F-150, 2004 F-150 Heritage and 2001-2003 E-150/250 vehicles equipped with a 4.2L engine may exhibit the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P1131 and/or P1151 (system too lean bank 1 or 2). This condition may be due to leaking isolator bolts/port gaskets in the upper-to-lower intake manifold mounting area. This condition is sometimes intermittent and may not be apparent on a warmed-up engine. ACTION Refer to the following Service Procedure. SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE THIS CONDITION COULD ALSO BE DUE TO WARM AMBIENT TEMPERATURES AND THE USE OF WINTER GRADE FUELS WHICH HAVE VERY HIGH VOLATILITY AND MAY BOIL IN THE FUEL LINES (VAPOR LOCK) DURING A SHORT HOT SOAK. OXYGENATED FUELS WILL AGGRAVATE THIS CONDITION. IF NON-OXYGENATED FUEL IS NOT AVAILABLE, USE MID/HIGH OCTANE FUELS WHICH HAVE LOWER VOLATILITY AND MAY HELP ALLEVIATE THE CONDITION. 1. Perform a self test. If DTC P1131 and/or P1151 are the only codes stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) proceed to Step 2. If any additional DTCs are present, follow normal diagnostic procedures found in the PC/ED Manual.

Condition General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall involving certain 2001-03 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra model vehicles, equipped with a 4.3L V6 (RPO L35 – VIN W or RPO LU3 – VIN X) engine. The ignition distributor cap and rotor in these vehicles may corrode and cause ignition system failure. This condition may result in rough engine idle, misfire, stalls, engine cranks but does not run and/or illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). Correction Dealers are to inspect the distributor ignition ventilation holes and, if necessary, replace the distributor cap and rotor, remove the External Ignition Protection (EIP) vent screens and install a foam sleeve around the A/C accumulator line. Vehicles Involved Involved are certain 2001-03 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra model vehicles, equipped with a 4.3L V6 (RPO L35 – VIN W or RPO LU3 – VIN X) engine and built within these VIN breakpoints: Service Procedure 1. Raise the engine hood and inspect the ignition distributor ventilation holes, located in the base of the distributor, to see if the External Ignition Protection (EIP) screens are present. 2. If the EIP vent screens are present: • Remove the vent EIP screens using the procedure listed in Step 3. • Refer to the appropriate procedure in the Engine Controls sub-section of the applicable Service Manual and replace the distributor cap and rotor. 3. Remove the vent screens (1), located in the base of the distributor, by inserting a plastic- handled, long blade awl or pick (2) into each of the two airflow vent holes and popping out the screen. If there are no EIP vent screens in the airflow vent holes, check the vent holes for debris and clear as necessary before reassembling the distributor. 4. If the EIP vent screens are not present, the distributor cap and rotor do not require replacement. 5. Install the foam sleeve, P/N 15190971, around the section of the A/C accumulator line that is routed directly above the distributor. Cut a slit in the sleeve and secure it to the line using tie- straps. Do not install a new foam sleeve if a sleeve is already in place on the A/C accumulator line. 6. 2001-03 CALIFORNIA, 2003 MASSACHUSETTS & MAINE VEHICLES ONLY : Install a Recall Identification Label. Also, for California vehicles, complete a “Proof Of Correction” certificate upon recall completion.
