SYMPTOM The 6-speed manual transmission grinds when shifting into 3rd gear, pops out of 3rd gear, or is hard to shift into 3rd gear. NOTE: These symptoms can be intermittent and sometimes more noticeable in colder climates. PROBABLE CAUSE The transmission has a faulty 3rd gear synchronizer or 3-4 shift sleeve.REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Remove the transmission: • Refer to Section 13 of the appropriate service manual, or • Online, enter keywords MANUAL REMOVAL, and select Manual Transmission Removal (V6 engine M/T) from the list. 2. Disassemble the transmission down to the mainshaft: • Refer to Section 13 of the appropriate service manual, or • Online, enter keywords TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY, and select Manual Transmission Disassembly (V6 engine M/T) from the list. 3. Replace the 3rd gear set: • Refer to Section 13 of the appropriate service manual, or • Online, enter keywords M/T MAINSHAFT DIS, and select M/T Mainshaft Disassembly (V6 engine M/T) from the list. 4. Reassemble the transmission: • Refer to Section 13 of the appropriate service manual, or • Online, enter keywords TRANSMISSION REASSEMBLY, and select Manual Transmission Reassembly (V6 engine M/T) from the list. 5. Reinstall the transmission: • Refer to Section 13 of the appropriate service manual, or • Online, enter keywords MANUAL INSTALL, and select Manual Transmission Installation (V6 engine M/T)from the list.

2007-2008 Mustang vehicles equipped with the 4.6L engine and TR3650 5 speed manual transmission may exhibit a clash noise and / or raspy (rough) feel on gear engagements during 1-2 or 2-3 upshifts. This condition may be more pronounced when the transmission is colder than 40 degrees F (5 degrees C). ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE Remove the transmission following Workshop Manual (WSW), Section 308-03B. Replace with new the 1-2 sychronizer and 3-4 sycronizer assemblies, following WSM, Section 308-03B. Install the transmission following WSW, Section 308-03B.

Note instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery. Refer to Service Precautions. See: Service Precautions/Technician Safety Information – Disconnect battery ground wire and mask it. – Loosen the screws; remove the reinforcing pipe. – Remove cover (1) from fuel lines. – Unclip fuel lines (2) and line for reversing light (3) from bracket. 1997 BMW 328i (E36) L6-2793cc 2.8L DOHC (M52) – Unfasten nuts and remove cable. Installation: Note line routing. Tightening torque, refer to chart below – Unfasten screws from top and bottom of starter motor. If installed: – Unfasten nut (1) on support and remove starter. Installation: – - Check starter pinion and starter crown gear for damage. INSTALLATION OF TRANSMISSION 1. PLACE TRANSMISSION AT INSTALLATION POSITION Insert the extension housing between the member and floor and then slide the transmission forward. Align the input shaft spline with the clutch disc, and push the transmission fully into position. 2.1 (22R-E) INSTALL TRANSMISSION BOLTS AND STIFFENER BOLTS AND STARTER Torque: [A] Transmission mounting bolt 730 kg-cm (53 ft-lb, 72 N-m) [B] Stiffener plate bolt 380 kg-cm (27 ft-lb, 37 N-m) [C] Starter bolt 400 kg-cm (29 ft-lb, 39 N-m 2.-2 (3VZ-E) INSTALL TRANSMISSION BOLTS AND STIFFENER BOLTS Torque: [A] Transmission mounting bolt 730 kg-cm (53 ft-lb, 72 N-m) [B] Stiffener plate bolt 380 kg-cm (27 ft-lb, 37 N-m) [C] Starter bolt 400 kg-cm (29 ft-lb, 39 N-m) 3. INSTALL ENGINE REAR MOUNTING AND BRACKET (a) Install the engine rear mounting. Torque the bolts. Torque: 260 kg-cm (19 ft-lb, 25 N-m) (b) Raise the transmission slightly by raising the engine with a jack and a wooden block under the transmission

1. On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the shift lever. 2. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, perform the following steps: 2.1. Apply the park brake. 2.2. Insert the ignition key and turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. 2.3. Depress the brake pedal and shift the transmission to the 1 position. 2.4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the left sound insulator. Remove the right instrument panel sound insulator. If the vehicle is equipped with a multiple CD changer located in the center console, remove the center console. Remove the center sound insulator. Remove the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. Remove and retain the instrument panel storage compartment. Remove the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 11. Remove and retain the left and right speakers and the speaker grilles. 12. Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the windshield defroster grille. Retain the grille and sunload sensor for use on the next IP carrier. 13. 14. 15. 16. If equipped with a sun load temperature sensor twist the sensor 1/4 turn counterclockwise in order to disengage. Disconnect the brown electrical connection from the body control module (BCM). Disconnect the purple electrical connection from the body control module (BCM).
