CAUTION: – Before servicing SRS, turn the ignition switch off, disconnect both battery cables and wait for at least 10 minutes. – Always work from the side of air bag module. 1. Remove lower lid from steering wheel, and disconnect air bag module connector. 2. Remove side lids. Using the TAMPER RESISTANT TORX (Size T50), remove left and right special bolts. Air bag module can then be removed. CAUTION: – Always place air bag module with pad side facing upward. – Do not attempt to disassemble air bag module. – The special bolts are coated with bonding agent. Do not use old bolts after removal; replace with new ones. 1996 Nissan-Datsun Maxima V6-2968cc 3.0L DOHC MFI (VQ30DE) – - – Replace air bag module if it has been dropped or sustained an impact. Do not expose the air bag module to temperatures exceeding 90°C (194°F). Do not allow oil, grease or water to come in contact with the air bag module. 3. Set steering wheel in the neutral position. 4. Disconnect horn connector and remove nuts. 5. Using steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Be careful not to over-tighten puller bolt on steering wheel. CAUTION: – Do not tap or bump the steering wheel. 6. Remove steering column cover. 7. Disconnect connectors and remove the four screws. The spiral cable can then be removed. CAUTION: – Do not attempt to disassemble spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable. Installation – Air Bag Module and Spiral Cable 1. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position. 2. Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position.

Install the crankshaft sprocket, making sure the mating marks face the front of the engine. Install the idler sprocket and lower timing chain using the mating marks and the paint marks made during the removal process. CAUTION: Be careful not to tear or damage the cylinder head gasket. Install the lower chain guides. Front cover installation: a. Using a scraper or other suitable tool remove all traces of liquid gasket from the cylinder block and front cover mating surfaces. b. Install new crankshaft seal in front cover. c. Install new oil passage O-rings and apply a continuous bead of RTV sealant to the front cover (see Figure 1). NOTE: Use Genuine Nissan RTV silicone sealant P/N 999MP-A7007, Three Bond P/N TB1207D or equivalent. d. Install the front cover to the engine. CAUTION: Be careful not to tear or damage the cylinder head gasket or oil seal. Align oil pump drive spacer with the oil pump, and install. Install the oil strainer. Install oil pan, referring to “Installation” in the “OIL PAN” section of the Service Manual. Install upper timing chain and sprockets, using the painted reference marks made during removal. Install upper chain tensioner. 1996 Nissan-Datsun 200SX L4-1597cc 1.6L DOHC MFI (GA16DE) a. b. Before installing the chain tensioner, insert a suitable pin into the pin hole of the chain tensioner (see Figure 2) to hold the tensioner in. Once the tensioner is installed, remove the pin. 10. Install the lower chain tensioner (See Figure 3). NOTE: Make sure the gasket is facing the proper direction before installing the tensioner. CAUTION: Now rotate the crankshaft by hand. Check that no binding or interference problems occur when the engine is rotated. 11. Install the thermostat housing. a. Use a scraper to remove all traces of liquid gasket from the mating surfaces of the engine front cover and the thermostat housing.

Checking Drive Belts 1. Inspect for cracks, fraying, wear or oil. If necessary, replace with a new one. 2. Inspect drive belt deflections by pushing midway between pulleys. Inspect drive belt deflections when engine is cold. Adjust if belt deflections exceed the limit.

Testing and Inspection Component Inspection CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (POS) 1. Loosen the fixing bolt of the sensor. 2. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor (POS) harness connector. 3. Remove the sensor. 5. Check resistance as shown in the figure. 6. If NG, replace crankshaft position sensor (POS). REMOVAL 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Remove the rocker cover. Remove the front right side tire and wheel using power tool. Remove the RH splash shield using power tool. Remove the auxiliary drive belt. Remove the coolant overflow reservoir tank. Remove the IVTC (intake valve timing control) cover by cutting the sealant using the Tool. Loosen the bolts in the order shown. 7. Set the No.1 cylinder at TDC on its compression stroke with the following procedure: a. Open the splash cover on RH under cover.

CAUTION: – Do not bend or twist timing belt. – After removing timing belt, do not turn crankshaft and camshaft separately because valves will strike piston heads. – Make sure that timing belt, camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and belt tensioner are clean and free from oil and water. – Installation should be carried out when engine is cold. Removal 1. Jack up the vehicle front and support with safety stand. 2. Remove engine under cover. 3. Remove front RH wheel and engine side cover. 4. Drain engine coolant from radiator. 5. Remove the following belts. – Compressor drive belt – Generator drive belt – Power steering pump drive belt Timing Marks 6. Set No. 1 piston at TDC of its compression stroke. 7. Loosen crankshaft pulley bolt. 8. Remove crankshaft pulley using a suitable puller. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. Remove radiator upper hose and water inlet hose. Remove compressor drive belt idler bracket. Remove water pump pulley. Remove breather pipe from timing belt front upper cover. Remove timing belt front covers.
