1. Apply the parking brake. 2. If equipped with a manual transmission, place the selector lever in fourth gear. 3. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place the selector lever in neutral. 4. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 5. Remove the ashtray finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 6. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the gearshift lever knob. 7. If equipped, disconnect the cellular phone electrical connectors. 8. Remove the console finish panel assembly by pulling upward from the front first. If equipped, disconnect the traction control switch electrical connector. If equipped, release the cellular phone wiring harness from the console finish panel assembly. 9. Remove the console rear finish panel assembly. Unclip by pulling rearward. 10. Unclip the parking brake boot from the console base. 11. Remove the console assembly front screws. 12. Remove the console assembly rear screws. 13. Remove the console air condition duct mounting screw. 14. Remove the console assembly by sliding rearward. 15. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Pull out the center instrument panel finish panel. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Pull out the center instrument panel finish panel assembly. 3. Remove the radio and center instrument panel finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 4. Remove the hood latch release handle. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Remove the hood latch release handle. 5. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover. 6. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. 1. Remove the four screws. 2. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. 7. If equipped, position the column gear shift lever aside. 8. Pull out the cluster finish panel. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Pull out the cluster finish panel. 9. Remove the cluster finish panel. 1. Disconnect the connectors. 2. Remove the cluster finish panel. 10. Remove the instrument cluster screws. 11. If equipped with an automatic transmission, pull out the cluster and remove the transmission range indicator. 12. Remove the instrument cluster. 1. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 2. Remove the instrument cluster. Installation 1. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to learn the strategy. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Driver Side 1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. If the airbag has not been deployed, wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service. Driver Side Airbag Module Remove/Install 2. From the underside of the steering wheel, remove the two screws that secure the driver side airbag module to the steering wheel. 3. Pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel far enough to access the wire harness connectors on the back of the airbag module. 4. Unplug the airbag module and horn switch wire harness connectors from the back of the airbag module. 5. Remove the driver side airbag module from the steering wheel. 6. If the airbag has been deployed, the clockspring must be replaced. See Clockspring in the Replacement for the procedures. 7. When installing the airbag module, connect the clockspring wire harness connector to the module by pressing straight in on the connector. Be certain that the connector is fully engaged by observing the latch arms on each side of the connector. When these arms move outward from the connector, the connector is latched. 8. Connect the horn switch wire harness connectors. 9. Install the airbag module in the steering wheel. Tighten the mounting screws to 10.2 N.m (90 in. lbs.) . 10. Do not connect the battery negative cable at this time. See Airbag System in the Diagnosis and Testing for the proper procedures. Passenger Side The following procedure is for replacement of a faulty or damaged passenger side airbag module. If the passenger side airbag module has been deployed, the instrument panel assembly must be replaced. The instrument panel assembly includes a passenger side airbag and airbag door. Refer to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators/Instrument Panel/Instrument Panel Assembly Replacement. 1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. 2. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable (Fig 14). 3. Remove the instrument panel top cover (Fig. 15). a. Using a trim stick (special tool C-4755) or equivalent, gently pry off the left and right A-pillar trim. Refer to: “Body and Frame : Interior Trim : Service and Repair” See: Trim Panel\Service and Repair b. Using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry out the front power window c. d. e. f. g. switch from the instrument panel center bezel. Disconnect the harness connector and remove. Remove the one center bezel retaining screw. Pull off the HVAC control knobs. Using a trim stick or equivalent, gently pry off the center bezel and remove. Remove the two top cover retaining screws. Gently pull rearward on the top cover and unlatch it from the instrument panel and remove. 4. Remove two screws retaining HVAC control. 5. Pull the HVAC control out of instrument panel, disconnect the one wiring connector, the one vacuum harness connector, and disconnect the two control cables. Remove HVAC control from vehicle. 6. Remove the two retaining screws to the upper and lower steering column shrouds. 7. Gently pry the upper and lower shrouds apart and remove from steering column. 8. Remove the left lower instrument panel bezel. Pull top rearward, lower to floor and with a quick pulling motion remove off instrument panel. 9. Disconnect the steering column wire connectors: a. Ignition Switch b. Multi-Function Switch c. Clockspring CAUTION: Lock the steering wheel in the straight ahead position. This will prevent clockspring damage when the steering wheel rotates freely. 10. Remove steering column: a. Remove the steering column pinch bolt at the base of the lower coupler. b. Remove the four retaining nuts to the steering column. c. Pull column rearward and out of instrument panel opening and remove from vehicle.
