DESCRIPTION The following vehicles share common transaxle Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC): • 1996-2005 Accent • 1996-2000 Elantra • 1997-2001 Tiburon Elantra and Tiburon vehicles produced beginning 6/1/99 and 2000-2005 Accent vehicles use a valve body with six solenoids and have several new DTCs. TRANSMISSION: E4OD SUBJECT: No upshift 4th gear starts, harsh upshifts, neutrals out after shifts APPLICATION: Ford-E/F Series, Bronco DATE: Jan 1995 E4OD No Upshifts, 4th Gear Starts, Harsh Upshifts, Neutrals Out After Shifts All of these concerns can be the result of an inappropriate Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor signal. The MLP sensor consists of six resistors connected in series (ganged). The resistance of the MLP sensor will vary based on which range the transmission is in. The MLP circuit can be checked using the following steps. (Step 1) Check the MLPS ground: Turn the ignition on. The voltage on pin 46 (sensor ground ) should not exceed .1v. If the voltage is excessive, add an additional ground to the existing ground wire (figure 2). Figure 2 Splice an additional ground from the existing ground wire to a known good ground.The negative post of the battery is the best. This view is of the pins of the MLP connector pins. (Step 2) Check the MLPS voltage: The voltage at pin 30 should vary-in increments- according to the position of the manual lever (figure 3). MLP voltage (ignition on) should be within 20% of these specifications. Note It is recommended that you use a break-out box. If a break-out box is not available, you will need to pierce the wires to pins 30 and 46 for these tests.

DESCRIPTION The Throttle Position (TP) sensor is a potentiometer. The TP sensor is connected to the throttle shaft on the throttle body. By monitoring the voltage on the signal line, the VCM calculates throttle position. As the throttle valve angle is changed (accelerator pedal moved), the TP sensor signal also changes. At a closed throttle position, the output of the TP sensor is low. As the throttle valve opens, the output increases so that at Wide Open Throttle (WOT,) the output voltage should be above 4.0 volts. PURPOSE The VCM calculates fuel delivery based on throttle valve angle (driver demand). A broken or loose TP sensor may cause intermittent bursts of fuel from an injector. This may cause an unstable idle because the VCM detects the throttle is moving.

The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is a magnetic generator type sensor. The sensor produces an alternating current signal. The CKP sensor sends the A/C signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in order to indicate the crankshaft RPM and the position. The PCM uses the CKP sensor signal in order to calculate the following: ^ The ignition sequence ^ The fuel injector sequence ^ Fuel injectors pulse width If the PCM does not receive a CKP sensor signal, the engine will not start. CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC ^ The engine is cranking. ^ The signal from the CKP sensor is missing for 2 seconds. ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS ^ The PCM illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). ^ The PCM records the operating conditions at the time of the diagnostic failure. This information is in the Freeze Frame buffer. CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE MIL/DTC The MIL turns OFF after three consecutive trips during which the diagnostic runs, and the fault is not present. A History DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles without a fault. Use a scan tool clear the DTC. Disconnect the PCM battery feed in order to clear the DTC
