1. NOTE: To prevent cable damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable assembly between the steering column shift tube bracket and the steering column bracket. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. 2. Carefully lift the locking tab and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column bracket. 2. Disconnect the cable push pin from the stud in the bulkhead. 3. Push the rubber grommet and transmission shift cable through the bulkhead. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 4R100 transmission 5. NOTE: To prevent shift cable assembly damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable between the manual control lever and the transmission shift cable bracket. Remove the transmission shift cable from the transmission. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Depress the lock tabs to release the transmission shift cable and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission shift cable bracket. 6. Remove the shift cable bracket from the transmission. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the shift cable bracket. 7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the shift cable. 1. CAUTION: Do not remove the steering column, steering wheel (3600) and driver side air bag module (043B13) as an assembly from the vehicle unless the steering column is locked to prevent rotation, or lower end of steering shaft is wired in such a way to prevent the steering wheel from being rotated. NOTE: All steering column components are assembled with fasteners. They are designed with a thread-locking system to prevent loosening due to vibrations associated with normal vehicle operation. Make sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01. Disconnect air bag backup power supply. Refer to Section 01-20B. 2. Remove steering wheel as described. 3. Remove RH and LH lower mouldings from instrument panel (04320) by pulling up and snapping out of retainers. 4. Remove instrument panel steering column cover (04459). 5. Remove air bag sliding contact (14A664) as described. 6. Remove tilt wheel handle and shank (3F609) by unscrewing it from steering column. 7. Rotate ignition switch lock cylinder (11582) to RUN position. Using a 1/8-inch drift, depress ignition switch retaining pin through access hole and remove ignition switch lock cylinder. 8. Remove four retaining screws from lower steering column shroud (3530) . Remove lower steering column shroud and upper steering column shroud. 9. Remove two instrument panel reinforcement brace bolts. Remove reinforcement. 10. Remove steering column to parking brake control shake brace. 11. Disconnect shift cable and bracket (7E395) from steering actuator housing (3F723) by removing one screw. 12. Remove two multi-function switch retaining screws and set multi-function switch (13K359) aside.

1998 Mercury Villager Transmission Range (TR) Switch REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Transmission Range (TR) Switch Removal 1. Disconnect the 2-pin and 8-pin transmission range (TR) switch connectors. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. 3. Remove the six engine and transmission splash shield bolts, engine and transmission splash shield screw and the engine and transmission splash shield (6776) . 4. Remove the shift cable and bracket nut, and the shift cable and bracket (7E395) from the manual shift linkage rod. 5. Remove the three TR switch bolts from the TR switch. 6. Remove the TR switch from the transaxle. Installation To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the TR switch. Refer to the procedure in this section. Tighten the TR switch bolts to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).

NOTE: If the transmission is to be removed for a period of time, support the engine with a safety stand and a wood block. 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 2. Place the selector lever in NEUTRAL position. 3. For vehicles equipped with a 4.0L SOHC engine, remove the fluid level indicator tube bolt from the heater hose bracket and remove the tube and indicator. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 5. If transmission disassembly is required; drain the transmission fluid. For additional information, refer to Fluid Pan, Gasket and Filter in this section. 6. Vehicles equipped with 4WD, remove the transfer case. For additional information, refer to Section 308-07B. 7. To maintain initial driveshaft balance, mark the driveshaft yoke and axle flange, so they can be installed in their original positions. 8. Remove the rear driveshaft. 1. Remove the four bolts. 2. Remove the driveshaft. 9. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Section 303-06. 10. NOTE: Mark the torque converter and the flexplate for correct alignment at reinstallation. Remove the four nuts. Rotate the flexplate to access all the nuts. 11. Disconnect the shift cable. 1. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Disconnect the shift cable from the bracket. 12. Remove the transmission wiring harness. 1. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connector. 2. Disconnect the transmission connector. 3. Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor connector. 4. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor connector. 13. Remove the three-way catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to Section 309-00. 14. CAUTION: Care should be taken not to damage the cooler lines. Hold the case fitting and remove the transmission cooler lines. 15. Remove the transmission nuts.

All vehicles CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result. 1. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in Section 501-20B. 2. Lock the steering column. 3. Remove the front seats. For additional information, refer toSection 501-10. 4. Remove the screws and position the parking brake release handle aside. 5. Remove the RH and LH scuff plates. 1. Remove the eight screws. 2. Remove the RH and LH scuff plates. 6. NOTE: LH side shown. RH side similar. Remove the LH and RH cowl side trim panels. ? Remove the pin-type retainer. 7. Remove the screws and position the hood release handle aside. 8. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Remove the steering column cover. 9. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. ? Remove the bolts and remove the reinforcement. 10. Disconnect the brake pedal position (BPP) switch electrical connector. 11. If equipped, disconnect the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch electrical connector. 12. If equipped, disconnect the shift cable from the steering column. 1. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. 2. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket. 13. Disconnect the upper intermediate steering shaft from the steering column shaft. ? Remove the pinch bolt. 14. Remove the LH and RH assist handles. 15. NOTE: RH side shown. LH side similar.
