Transmission Replacement Tools Required J 42371 Hydraulic Clutch Line Separator Removal Procedure 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Shift the transmission into 3rd or 4th gear. Remove the shift lever assembly. Drain the transmission fluid. If vehicle is a 2 wheel drive (2WD), remove the propeller shaft. If vehicle is a 4 wheel drive (4WD), remove the transfer case. Using J 42371, push back on the white plastic sleeve on the quick connect in order to separates the hydraulic clutch line from the clutch actuator quick connect. 7. Disconnect the following engine wiring harness electrical connectors: Backup lamp switch (1) Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (3) Oxygen sensor (4) 8. Remove the oxygen sensor (2) from the transmission bracket. 9. Remove the engine harness clips from the fuel feed/return line clip/bracket. Zoom Sized for Print 10. If equipped with 4WD, remove the vent hose clip from the bracket. 11. If equipped with 4WD, remove the vent hose clip (1) from the fuel feed/return hose bracket. Zoom Sized for Print 12. If equipped with 4WD, remove the fuel feed/return hose clip from the bracket. 13. Remove the starter. 14. Support the transmission using a suitable transmission jack. 15. Remove the transmission support. Zoom Sized for Print 16. Disconnect the vent hose from the transmission. 17. Remove the vent hose clip from the clutch housing. Zoom Sized for Print 18. Remove the transmission to clutch housing bolts. 19. Remove the transmission from the clutch housing.

1. Thoroughly clean the transmission case and extension housing in solvent and blow dry with compressed air. 2. Inspect the transmission case for the following: 1. Stripped bolt hole threads. 2. Gasket and mating surfaces for burrs or nicks. 3. Obstructions to vent and fluid passages. Cracks or warpage. 3. Inspect the extension housing for cracks, burrs or warpage. 4. Inspect case bearing for damage. Replace as needed. 5. Remove the case bearing. 1. Install the Bearing Cup Puller with Slide Hammer into case bearing. 2. Remove the case bearing. Use an oil stone to remove any nicks or burrs in the bearing case bore. 6. Install a new case bearing. 1. Assemble and install the Drive Handle and Bearing Installer. 2. Position new case bearing onto bearing installer tool. 7. Tap case bearing into case bearing bore. 8. Install the A4LD Holding Fixure Adapter. 1. Position the A4LD Holding Fixture Adapter on the rear of the transmission case. 2. Install the A4LD Holding Fixture Adapter bolts. 9. Attach the fixture arm of the Bench Mounted Holding Fixture to the A4LD Holding Fixture Adapter. 10. Install transmission into Bench Mounted Holding Fixture. Rotate the transmission so that the fluid pan rail is facing up. -MOUNTED HOLDING FIXTURE IS SECURE. 11. Using Shift Lever Seal Replacer, install the manual control lever shaft seal. Lubricate the manual control lever shaft seal with petroleum jelly. 12. Assemble the manual valve inner lever and parking lever actuating rod as shown. 13. Install the manual control lever shaft. 14. NOTE: Align the manual control lever shaft alignment groove with the manual control lever shaft spring pin bore in the transmission case. Install the manual control lever shaft spring pin. Tap the manual control lever shaft spring pin into the transmission case. 15. Install the manual valve inner lever and parking lever actuating rod on to the manual control lever shaft. 16. Install the manual valve inner lever nut on the manual control lever shaft and tighten. 17. Install the output shaft thrust washer (No. 11). Coat the output shaft thrust washer with petroleum jelly. 18. Install the park gear.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . 2. Remove two console armrest mounting access covers (047A62) at rear of console panel (045A36) (snaps out) to gain access to armrest retaining bolts. 3. Remove four armrest-to-floor bracket retaining bolts and remove armrest assembly (snaps out of console). 4. Remove console panel gear shift plate (044G24) (snaps out). On vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, shift boot is attached to bottom of finish panel. Remove shift knob and slide boot and console panel gear shift plate up shift lever to remove. 5. To remove top finish panel position emergency brake lever in the UP position. Remove four retaining screws and lift top finish panel up. Disconnect necessary wire connectors. 6. Remove two console-to-rear floor bracket retaining screws. 7. Insert a small screwdriver into two notches at bottom of front upper finish panel and snap out. 8. If the vehicle has a radio chassis (18806) , the radio chassis must be removed. Refer to Section 15-01. If the vehicle doesn’t have a radio chassis , use a small screwdriver and pry radio cover finish panel out of console. 9. Flex glove compartment bin tabs inward. Drop down glove compartment (06010) assembly. Remove two console-to-instrument panel retaining screws. 10. Remove four console bracket retaining screws. Remove console panel from vehicle. 11. Remove three bolts retaining steering column opening cover (3A673) and reinforcement panel. Remove cover. 12. Remove steering column opening reinforcement by removing two bolts. 13. Remove two bolts retaining steering column opening reinforcement and remove reinforcement. 14. Remove six steering column retaining nuts (two retaining the hood release mechanism and four retaining column to lower brake pedal support). Lower steering column to floor. 15. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds (3530) and disconnect wiring from turn signal and windshield wiper switch (13K359) . 16. Remove steering column through bolt and nut on engine compartment side of cowl panel. Remove steering column from vehicle. 17. Remove brake pedal support nut. 18. Snap out instrument panel defroster opening grille (044E82) . 19. Remove screws from speaker covers. Snap out speaker covers. 20. Remove front screws retaining RH and LH scuff plates at cowl side trim panels. 21. Remove RH and LH cowl side trim panels. 22. Disconnect wiring at RH cowl side. 23. Remove cowl side retaining bolts (one each side). 24. Remove five cowl top screws attachments. 25. Gently pull instrument panel (04320) away from RH side of cowl panel. Disconnect speedometer cable, air conditioning controls and wire connectors. 26. Place a drain pan or suitable container under the heater water hose connections at the cowl panel. 27. Disconnect heater water hoses (18472) from heater core tubes and plug heater water hoses with suitable 5/8-inch and 3/4-inch plugs. Cap heater core tubes to prevent coolant loss from heater core (18476) during removal of heater case. 28. Remove screw retaining A/C evaporator case support bracket (19A639) to cowl top panel. 29. Disconnect vacuum supply supply hose (black) from A/C vacuum supply in engine compartment. 30. Working under the hood (16612) , remove nut retaining heater case to cowl panel. 31. Inside passenger compartment, remove screw retaining A/C evaporator case mounting bracket (19A865) to cowl top panel. 32. Remove one screw retaining A/C evaporator case mounting bracket below heater case to cowl panel. 33. Carefully pull heater case from cowl panel and remove heater case assembly from vehicle. 34. To install, reverse Removal procedure. Check operation of all components. 35. After repairs have been completed, check the coolant level in the radiator (8005) and in the radiator coolant recovery reservoir (8A080) . Fill as required with the recommended coolant mixture.

IMPORTANT! Park your car on a level surface and block the wheels. Engaging and disengaging the emergency brake and gear shift is required for installation. -Remove the 2×8mm bolts located under the rubber pad in the center console compartment. -Remove the shift knob by rotating it counter clockwise. -Remove center section of the console, held in by pressure clips with the shift boot. -Remove 2 screws just forward of the shifter. -Remove the ashtray, cigarette lighter, and cigarette lighter housing held in place by pressure clips leaving the wiring attached. -Remove 2×8mm bolts below the temperature controls. -Disconnect the white electrical connection (MS3) only thus allowing the console to be removed. -Carefully remove the entire center console by pulling it back, then angling it up towards the back of the car. Adjusting the emergency brake and gear shift lever may be necessary for removal. -Remove the 4×10mm bolts around the shifter cage. -Remove the steel sleeves with a flat head screw driver from the top. -Remove the rubber bushings from the base of the shifter cage by pealing them out from underneath. -Install the JBR Shifter Bushings underneath the shifter cage indexing the small diameter side (up) of the bushing with the shifter cage. -Set the supplied washers in place on the top side of the shifter cage taking care not to allow the bushings to come out of their indexed locations in the shifter cage. -Reinstall the 4×10mm bolts and tighten firmly. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. -Carefully reassemble the console and enjoy your new shifter!

1. If equipped with power seats, move the seat fully rearward. 2. Remove the passenger air bag. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B. 3. Remove the driver air bag. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B. 4. NOTE: On vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, move the shift lever to the 1 position to ease removal. Carefully pry to release the (A) clips and remove the (B) steering column opening cover. 5. Position the electrical connector aside. Release the push clip from the lower instrument panel steering column cover (044F08). 6. Pull to release the three (A) clips and remove the (B) fuse door. 7. Position the hood latch release handle aside. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Position the hood latch release handle aside. 8. Position the parking brake release handle aside. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Position the parking brake release handle aside. 9. If equipped, remove the instrument panel floor duct panel. Remove the two push clips and release the expander clip. 10. Remove the lower instrument panel steering column cover (04459). 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the lower instrument panel steering column cover. 11. Remove the LH and RH scuff plates. 12. Remove the LH and RH cowl side trim panels. 13. Disconnect the brake pedal position (BPP) switch electrical connector. 14. Remove the (A) radio ground and the (B) GEM/CTM ground bolts. 15. Disconnect the LH instrument panel main harness connectors.
