Transmission Range (TR) Switch Removal 1. Disconnect the 2-pin and 8-pin transmission range (TR) switch connectors. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. 3. Remove the six engine and transmission splash shield bolts, engine and transmission splash shield screw and the engine and transmission splash shield (6776) . 4. Remove the shift cable and bracket nut, and the shift cable and bracket (7E395) from the manual shift linkage rod. 5. Remove the three TR switch bolts from the TR switch. 6. Remove the TR switch from the transaxle. Installation To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the TR switch. Refer to the procedure in this section. REMOVAL 1. Apply parking brake and disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove bolt and nut attaching intermediate shaft to steering column. 3. Disconnect shift linkage rod(s) from column. 4. Remove screws from underneath steering wheel, then lift horn switch assembly from steering wheel. 5. Disconnect horn switch wires by pulling spade terminal from blade connectors, then squeeze J-clip ground wire terminal and pull it out of hole in steering wheel. 6. Remove horn switch assembly, then the steering wheel retaining nut. 7. Using suitable puller, remove steering wheel from shaft. When servicing a tilt steering column, the steering wheel must be in the full Up position when removed. 8. Remove steering column floor opening cover plate screws. 9. Remove shroud by loosening screw at bottom, selecting position 1 on manual three speeds and automatics and spreading shroud open, and withdrawing out of instrument panel opening while pulling up and away from column. 10. On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove shift lever cable. 11. On all models, remove instrument panel column opening cover. 12. Remove column support bracket to pedal support bracket attaching bolts. 13. Disconnect turn signal/hazard warning and ignition switch wiring harnesses. 14. Remove column from vehicle, then the column support bracket from column. INSTALLATION

REMOVAL 1. Raise vehicle. 2. Disconnect switch wire harness connector. 3. Pry washer lock tabs upward and remove switch attaching nut and tabbed washer. 4. Remove switch adjusting bolt. 5. Slide switch off manual valve shaft. INSTALLATION 1. Disconnect shift linkage rod from shift lever on left side of transmission. 2. Rotate manual shift lever all the way rearward. Then rotate lever forward two detent positions to Neutral. 3. Install switch on manual valve shaft and install switch adjusting bolt finger tight. Do not tighten bolt at this time. 4. Install tabbed washer on manual valve shaft and install switch attaching nut. Tighten nut to 6.9 Nm (61 inch lbs.) torque but do not bend washer lock tabs over nut at this time. 5. Verify that transmission is in Neutral. 6. Rotate switch to align neutral standard line with vertical groove on manual valve shaft. 7. Align switch standard line with groove or flat on manual valve shaft. 8. Tighten switch adjusting bolt to 13 Nm (108 inch lbs.) torque. 9. Bend at least two washer lock tabs over switch attaching nut to secure it. 10. Connect shift linkage rod to shift lever on left side of case. 11. Connect switch wires to harness and lower vehicle. 12. Check switch operation. Engine should start in Park and Neutral only.

LUBRICATION SERVICE INTERVALS Transaxle/Transmission Check fluid level every 12 months or 15,000 miles. Change fluid and filter every 30,000 miles. If vehicle is operated under severe conditions, change fluid more often. If severe darkening of fluid and strong odor are noted, bands should also be adjusted. Transfer Case On 4WD and AWD models, change transfer case fluid every 30, 000 miles. CHECKING FLUID LEVEL RECOMMENDED FLUID Transaxle/Transmission Use Chrysler Plus/Mitsubishi Plus ATF, Dexron or Dexron-II ATF. TESTING DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE 1) Before testing transmission, ensure fluid level is correct, shift linkage, throttle cable, neutral switch and idle speed are correctly adjusted. Ensure transfer case linkage and transfer switch (if equipped) are correctly adjusted. Battery must be fully charged for accurate testing. 2) To aid in fault diagnosis, determine if fault is hydraulic, electronic or a combination of both. 3) The electronic control is capable of storing self- diagnostic codes. To determine if a fault is electrical, read any stored diagnostic codes. Repair electrical fault associated with the code. See DIAGNOSTIC CODES. NOTE: Not all electrical faults will cause a diagnostic code to be stored (i.e. throttle position sensor and brake signal). Farther circuit tests may be required See ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS & CIRCUIT.
