Removal 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel. Remove shock absorber. See LOWER CONTROL ARM & BALL JOINT . Remove hub grease cap. Remove ABS speed sensor and wire harness clamp from steering knuckle. Remove brakeline bracket from steering knuckle. Remove the bolt and separate the brake tube bracket from the steering knuckle. Using Special Tool (09023-00100), disconnect the brake tube from the front disc brake caliper assembly. Remove the bolt and separate the brake tube bracket from the steering knuckle. Remove the 2 bolts and front disc brake caliper assembly. Remove rotor. 2. On 4WD models, using a screwdriver and a hammer, remove the front axle hub grease cap. Remove the cotter pin and a lock cap. Remove the front axle hub nut. On all models, remove the nut and separate the stabilizer link assembly from the steering knuckle. Remove the cotter pin. Using Special Tool (09628- 62011), separate the tie rod end sub-assembly from the steering knuckle. 3. Remove 2 lower ball joint bolts, and disconnect lower ball joint. Remove upper ball joint, cotter pin and retaining nut. Using ball joint separator, separate upper ball joint from knuckle. On 4WD models, using a plastic hammer, separate the front axle hub from the front drive shaft. Remove the front axle hub sub- assembly. On all models, remove steering knuckle with hub. Installation To install, reverse removal procedure. Clean bolt threads. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Depress brake pedal several times. Check front wheel alignment. Ensure ABS speed sensor has a good signal.

Removal 1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02. 2. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly. 3. Remove rear stabilizer bar link and bushing link nuts at both ends of rear stabilizer bar (5A772) . Rotate bar up and out of the way. 4. Disconnect parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) at rear disc brake caliper (2553) . 5. Install three Rotunda Spring Cages 086-00031 or equivalent to rear spring as follows: a. Install one spring cage without an adjuster link to the inboard side (the innermost “bend” of the rear spring (5560) ). b. Install two more spring cages, with adjusters, at 120 degree angles to the previously installed cage. Spring, Rear 6. Place a transmission jack or suitable stand under the rear suspension arm and bushing (5500) as far outboard as possible. 7. Support the rear wheel knuckle (5A969) assembly by wiring the rear suspension arm and bushing to the body. 8. Remove lower rear shock absorber mounting bolt, washer and nut. 9. NOTE: Rear suspension arm and bushing must not be lowered until pivot bolts are loose. Do not attempt to remove plastic cap on front pivot nut. Loosen both inboard pivot bolts on rear suspension arm and bushing . 10. Remove two bolts and nuts retaining rear suspension arm and bushing to rear wheel knuckle . 11. Lower the rear suspension arm and bushing by lowering jack. Ensure spring cages properly seat on rear spring as rear suspension arm and bushing is dropped. 12. Remove jack, lower rear suspension arm and bushing down fully by hand and remove rear spring with cages in place. 13. Remove rear spring center mounting insulators (5741) , if necessary. 14. If spring cages are to be removed for installation on rear spring , use Coil Spring Compressor D78P-5310-A or equivalent to compress rear spring and remove cages. Rear spring center mounting insulator should be installed on rear spring before installing rear spring in tool to prevent slipping of plates.

CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect the performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major service expense. A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation is necessary. Do not use a new part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts. NOTE: New cam bolts and lock nuts must be installed whenever the lower control arm is removed. 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-04. 2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04. 3. Remove two bolts, one pushpin and the shield. 4. NOTE: To remove the nut, first loosen the nut, then use the hex holding feature to prevent the stabilizer bar link ball joint from turning while removing the nut. Remove and discard the nut and while prying down on the bar, disconnect the stabilizer bar link. 5. Remove and discard the nut and bolt. Disconnect the shock absorber and spring assembly. 6. NOTE: The hex holding feature can be used to prevent turning of the stud while removing the nut. NOTE: Make sure not to lose the tapered washer on the ball joint. Remove and discard the nut. Separate the front suspension lower arm from the wheel knuckle. 7. Remove and discard the front nut and bolt.

A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation becomes necessary. Do not use a new part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts. 1. Remove the upper radiator sight shield. 2. Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12. 3. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03. 4. Disconnect the upper radiator hose. 5. Disconnect the lower radiator hose. 6. Disconnect the dual flow coolant valve electrical connector and the A/C line from the fan shroud. 3.0L Engines 7. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor and the idle air control (IAC) valve electrical connectors. All vehicles 8. Separate the return hose from the fan shroud and position aside. 9. Disconnect the lower radiator hose. 10. Remove the two bolts and position the multi-cooler assembly and fan shroud assembly aside. 11. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04. 12. Remove two pushpins, four bolts and both splash shields. 13. Remove the bolts and the shield. 14. NOTE: To remove the nut, first loosen the nut, then use the hex holding feature to prevent the stabilizer bar link ball joint from turning while removing the nut. Remove the nut and disconnect the stabilizer bar link (5K483). Discard the nut. 15. NOTE: To remove the nut, first loosen the nut, then use the hex holding feature to prevent the stabilizer bar link ball joint from turning while removing the nut. Remove the nut and stabilizer bar link. Discard the nut. 16. Remove and discard the nut and bolt. Disconnect the left shock absorber and spring assembly.

1998 Ford Windstar Strut and Spring Assembly REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Removal 1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 2. Remove the front wheel and tire assembly. 3. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the 6mm drive hole in the front stabilizer bar link ball stud, do not use an Allen wrench to break loose or tighten to final torque the front stabilizer bar link-to-front shock absorber nut. Remove the stabilizer bar link retaining nut and disconnect the link from the strut. 4. CAUTION: Do not allow the halfshaft to move outboard. Over extension of the CV joint may result in the separation of internal parts, causing failure of the joint. Remove the strut assembly-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt. If required, slightly spread the steering knuckle to ease the removal of the strut. Pry down on the lower control arm and roll the strut base out of the knuckle. Do not pry on the halfshaft, as damage may result. Wire the steering knuckle up to prevent the halfshaft from moving outboard. 5. Partially lower the vehicle. 6. Support the strut assembly and remove the top three mount-to-strut tower nuts. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle. 7. CAUTION: The strut assembly is under spring tension. Attempting to disassemble the strut without properly compressing the spring can result in injury. Using a suitable spring compressing tool, slightly compress the strut spring to relieve initial tension. Loosen the upper rod nut. Continue to compress the spring until the tension is relieved. Remove the upper rod nut. 8. Remove all upper mounting parts, coil spring, and coil spring isolators from the strut and save them for reassembly. Carefully note the position of each part during removal to ensure proper reassembly. Inspect each part for wear and damage as it is removed. Installation 1. CAUTION: The bearing and seal assembly is press-fit onto the upper mount. The mount washers must be installed in the correct orientation. NOTE: Be sure to check the spring insulator for damage before assembly. If the outer metal splash shield is bent or damaged, it must be carefully bent back, so it does not touch the locator on the bearing and seal assembly. NOTE: New gas struts are shipped with the rod in a locked down position. To extend the new strut, remove the external tie down and/or rotate the upper end of the rod, counterclockwise. Install the coil spring insulator, coil spring, and upper mounting parts to the new strut assembly. Make sure the spring is correctly seated in both spring seats.
