SIR component location affects how a vehicle should be serviced. There are parts of the SIR system installed in various locations around a vehicle. To find the location of the SIR components refer to SIR Identification Views . There are several reasons for disabling the SIR system, such as repairs to the SIR system or servicing a component near or attached to an SIR component. There are several ways to disable the SIR system depending on what type of service is being performed. The following information covers the proper procedures for disabling/enabling the SIR system. SIR Service Precautions Caution: When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components. Serious injury can occur. Failure to observe the correct procedure could also result in unnecessary SIR system repairs. The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) maintains a reserved energy supply. The reserved energy supply provides deployment power for the air bags if the SDM loses battery power during a collision. Deployment power is available for as much as 1 minute after disconnecting the vehicle power. Waiting 1 minute before working on the system after disabling the SIR system prevents deployment of the air bags from the reserved energy supply. General Service Instructions The following are general service instructions which must be followed in order to properly repair the vehicle and return it to its original integrity: • Do not expose inflator modules to temperatures above 65°C (150°F). • Verify the correct replacement part number. Do not substitute a component from a different vehicle. • Use only original GM replacement parts available from your authorized GM dealer. Do not use salvaged parts for repairs to the SIR system.

CAUTION When performing service around Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system components or wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Failure to do so could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury, or unneeded SIR system repairs. Catera 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the steering wheel. 3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. 4. Insert a small pointed awl or wire into the ignition lock cylinder release pinhole. 5. Pull out the ignition lock cylinder. Fig. Insert a pointed tool into the release pin hole To install: 6. Install the lock cylinder. 1. Look into the hole that receives the lock cylinder on the lower RH side in order to locate the locking lever. 2. Carefully push down on the locking lever using a small flat-bladed tool until an audible click is heard. 3. Place the lock cylinder into the empty hole. 7. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Install the steering wheel. Deville, Fleetwood, Eldorado and Seville 1. Disable the SIR system as follows: 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Turn the ignition switch OFF . 3. Remove the SIR fuse. On 1990 Deville and Fleetwood, remove SIR fuse No. 3 from the fuse panel. On 1991-93 Deville and Fleetwood, remove SIR fuse No. 18 from the fuse panel. On 1990-91 Eldorado and Seville, remove SIR fuse No. 19 from the fuse panel. On 1992-93 Eldorado and Seville, remove SIR fuse No. All from the engine compartment fuse panel. 4. On Deville and Fleetwood, remove the left lower sound insulator. On Eldorado and Seville, remove the left side sound insulator. 5. Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and detach the yellow 2-way connector at the base of the steering column.

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 in SIR. 2. Remove the upper and lower trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement. IMPORTANT: The abrasion sleeve located on the steering column wire harness assembly must be reinstalled. Make note of what connector is coming out of the abrasion sleeve for installation purposes. 3. Remove the wire harness assembly (1) from the wire harness strap (2). 4. Disconnect the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly connector from the SIR system coil connector. 5. Slide the 2 connectors (2) of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly out of the bulkhead connector (1). 6. Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws (1) and (3) from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2). 7. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) from the steering column tilt head assembly. Installation Procedure 1. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) onto the steering column tilt head assembly. NOTE: IMPORTANT: Be sure that the electrical contact of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) rests on the turn signal cancel cam assembly. 2. Screw the 2 pan head tapping screws (1) and (3) into the turn signal and multifunction assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the top pan head tapping screw (1) to 3 N.m (27 lb in). Tighten the side pan head tapping screw (3) to 7 N.m (62 lb in). Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

1988-94 Models See Figures 1 and 2 1. Remove the steering wheel. Fig. Fig. 1: Installing the lock cylinder Fig. Fig. 2: Ignition switch 2. Remove the turn signal switch. It is not necessary to completely remove the switch from the column. Pull the switch rearward far enough to slip it over the end of the shaft, but do not pull the harness out of the column. 3. Turn the lock to Run. 4. If necessary, remove the ignition key. 5. If equipped, remove the buzzer switch assembly. 6. Remove the lock retaining screw and remove the lock cylinder. WARNING If the retaining screw is dropped on removal, it may fall into the column, requiring complete disassembly of the column to retrieve the screw. To install: 7. Rotate the key to the stop while holding onto the cylinder. 8. Push the lock all the way in. 9. Install the screw. Tighten the screw to 40 inch lbs. (5 Nm) for regular columns, 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm) for tilt columns. 10. Install the turn signal switch and the steering wheel. 1995-98 Models See Figures 3, 4 and 5 CAUTION When performing service around the SIR system components or wiring, the SIR system MUST be disabled. Failure to do so could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or unneeded SIR system repairs. When carrying a live inflator module, make sure that the bag and trim cover are pointed away from you. Never carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the underside of the module. In case of accidental deployment, the bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury. When placing a live inflator module on a bench or other surface, always face the bag and trim cover up, away from the surface. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the SIR system. 2. Remove the upper and lower shroud, air bag module and the steering column.
