Step 1: I began by removing the two (four screws for those who have not modified their hood open latch, see photo (1) screws on the panel under the steering column. Be careful when pulling the panel out because you can break the spring clips that hold the panel in at the top. Photo 1: Hood Latch Section Removed. Step 2: Now that the lower panel is off I removed the Lower Dash Trim Panel Screws and the Radio Bezel Screws indicated by yellow arrows. Also take note in the picture the blue arrow indicating the Hood Latch still in place – no need to remove those P.I.A. screws. Step 3: Now I removed the Dash Trim Panel Upper Screws as indicated by the yellow arrows. Step 4: Next I carefully removed the radio bezel first and then gently squeezed the Dash Trim Panel out over the column. The only way to make that easier is to loosen the steering column bolts and lower the column a little. When you get it out you need to unplug the Headlight and Dimmer Switches as shown. Step 5: Now I removed the 4 screws holding the Instrument Panel in place. Step 6: Now slide the Instrument Panel (IP) forward, pulling the left side out first. This will give you access to the back side so you can remove the plugs from the back of the IP – on my 95 there are three, two white and one black – see the photo. Step 7: Now that the IP is out of the truck you need to remove the IP Bezel. This requires the removal of (7) torx drive screws as indicated in the photo. Screws Bezel Off Step 8: Now we have access to the gauges. To remove the Speedometer you need to gently pry up and remove the gauges on either side of the Speedometer. Then gently pry up and remove the Speedometer. Here is the Speedo out . . . Step 9: Now turn the speedo over and place it face down on a soft towel or rag to protect the gauge face and needles. You will notice I did not do this as I took my time and was careful not to damage anything on the front. This photo shows you the Odometer/Trip Meter Motor installed in the back of the Speedo. To remove the motor gently twist it in a clockwise fashion and it will lift out of the socket. When trying to remove the motor you may either have to depress or lift up on the plastic tabs. Then unplug the leads as shown in this picture.

If the actual vehicle mileage cannot be verified, the service center will supply a speedometer/odometer module with the odometer display preset to zero (”0″) miles and the service odometer segment (”s”) illuminated in the vicinity of the odometer display. In addition, an odometer mileage sticker is supplied with the replacement odometer. This sticker must display the estimated vehicle mileage and is to be affixed to the driver’s door. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Position vehicle on a flat surface to prevent movement when shift control selector lever is out of position. 3. Turn ignition switch to unlock shift control selector lever and move lever down from front of EIC. 4. Tilt steering column down as far as possible. 5. Remove RH and LH instrument panel moulding (046A63) by pulling upward to unsnap two clips. Disconnect electrical connectors. Set instrument panel mouldings aside. 6. Remove five Torx® screws below instrument cluster that retain instrument panel finish panel (044D70) applique. 7. Unsnap instrument panel finish panel applique along top and pull instrument panel finish panel applique away from instrument panel (04320). 8. Disconnect switch assembly electrical connectors. Set instrument panel finish panel applique aside. 9. Remove three screws from bottom of instrument panel steering column cover (04459) (two screws on RH side, one screw on LH side). 10. Lift up top section of instrument panel steering column cover to undo a clip located on LH side near steering wheel (3600) . Separate upper section of steering wheel from side section near ignition switch . Slip upper section off shift control selector lever and housing (7210). 11. Remove four Torx® screws retaining instrument cluster to instrument panel . 12. Place clean, soft cloth on steering column shroud (3530) to prevent scratching front surface of instrument cluster as it is removed. 13. Tilt top of instrument cluster slightly toward rear of vehicle. Undo two snaps beneath instrument cluster retaining transmission control selector indicator in instrument cluster (column shift only). 14. Reach around to back of instrument cluster to unplug three connectors (two connectors in middle, and one on LH side). NOTE: The connectors have locking tabs that must be pressed in to unplug the connection. 15. Loosen two clips retaining transmission control selector indicator to instrument cluster (column shift only). 16. Pull transmission control selector indicator down and to the right to position it out of way (column shift only). 17. Push bottom of instrument cluster into instrument panel cavity. Tilt top of instrument cluster toward rear of vehicle. Pull instrument cluster up and out of cavity. 18. To install, reverse Removal procedure. NOTE: Fuel computer internal fuel economy values will be re-initialized after battery disconnect. Customer may notice a change in AVE ECON and DTE calculations from this. Accuracy will improve gradually as new fuel economy history is developed. This may take about 525 miles.

While in the self-diagnostic function, the TRIP/RESET button is used to start the Beeper Drive Circuit Test and the Gauge Drive Circuit Check. If the vehicle speed exceeds 1.2 MPH (2 km/h) or the ignition switch is turned OFF, the self-diagnostic function ends. Before entering the self-diagnostic function, check the No. 9 (10A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box and the No. 10 (7.5A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Tests/Procedures: Potential Causes: Tech Tips: 1. Unplug the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in the rear differential. 2. Check the voltage on the Pink/Orange wire in the VSS connector. The Body Control Module (BCM) sends B+ out to the sensor on the Pink/Orange wire at pin 21 in the C2 connector of the Body Control Module (BCM) . 3. Check the resistance of the Dark Green/Orange wire to ground. It should be 100- 300 ohms. The BCM has a resistor to ground to lower the current flow in the circuit. 4. If both wires are OK, replace the VSS. Body Control Module (BCM) Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Wiring Vehicles with ABS get the VSS signal from the same sensor but the signal first goes to the Controller Anti-lock Brakes (CAB) and then to the Body Control Module (BCM) and then to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
