Remove the tweeter speakers and the stereo cassette AM/FM radio. Refer to Section 9F, Audio Systems. Remove the screws and the instrument panel storage compartment. Remove the instrument cluster dimmer switch assembly. Remove the instrument cluster. Remove the chime module. Remove the kick panels. Remove the glove box. Remove the screws and the glove box housing. Disconnect the glove box housing electrical connectors. Remove the knee bolster. 14. Remove the nuts and the bolts securing the steering column. 15. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors. 16. Lower the steering column. 17. Remove the screw behind the stereo cassette AM/FM radio. 18. Remove the screw securing the instrument panel to the heater air distributor case. 19. Remove the bolts and the glove box brace. 20. Remove the instrument panel screw behind the glove box brace. 21. Remove the instrument panel bolts below the windshield. 22. Remove the bolts securing the bottom of the instrument panel to the floor. 23. Remove the bolts securing the sides of the instrument panel to the body.

Remove the two bolts – 1 – (1.5 Nm). Remove center storage compartment unit – 2 – from instrument panel. Glove Compartment, Removing and Installing Center Instrument Panel Trim, Removing and Instrument Cluster Trim, Removing and Installing Passenger Side Instrument Panel Disconnect wiring harness from warning light switch. Installing Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

1. Unscrew the shift knob and remove the boot. 2. Remove cover which houses the lighter assembly. There are four clips holding it to the center console, they just pop out. 3. Unplug the lighter assembly. Below you can see the cover off and the four clips which hold it to the center console. 4. Remove the two screws holding the power window controls (if applicable). Next unplug the locks to remove the assembly. 5. Remove the rubber mat, and the two bolts in the storage compartment of the center console. 6. Remove the two screws on either side of the center console. 7. Unscrew the 2 screws at the front of the center console. After the bolts and the screws have been removed the entire console will be free and can be taken out 8. Carefully slide an exacto knife under the clip on the right side of the assembly to remove it. CAUTION : Be extremely careful in this step, if the knife is torqued too hard the blade could break and become a dangerous projectile. 9. Insert a flat head screw driver into the gap created by the exacto knife to pry the clip off.

Automatic Convertible Top Operation E36 Convertible Opening and closing of the convertible is done from one rocker switch in the center console. With the ignition key in position 1 (KLR), press and hold the switch until the processes is completed. No road speed can be present when operating the top. The indicator lamp (shown with the arrow) lights up continuously during top operation. The lamp will flash after releasing the switch if the opening or closing process is not yet completed. NOTE: The trunk cannot be opened during convertible top operation, or when the top is in the mid-way position. This is to prevent damage to the top storage box lid and trunk lid. Convenience closing from drivers door lock Models with a fully automatic top allow convenience closing from the drivers door lock. Hold the key in the lock position with the doors closed. The top will stop moving immediately if the key is released. Emergency closing procedures Should the convertible top fail electrically in the top down position it can be raised until the top can be repaired. To release the top motor drives and begin raising the top, raise the left side of the rear seat. Find a lever with an orange strap. Pull on the strap until resistance is felt and two audible clunks are heard. Open the storage compartment lid (note: The lid should open easily, if resistance is felt pull on the release lever again until it is fully disengaged). Grab the convertible top and lift it out of the storage well. Lift the rear bow to the vertical position and close the storage lid. To lock the convertible top to the windshield frame remove the plastic cover from the center of the front convertible top frame. Insert the allen key from the tool kit into the top latch motor drive. Turn the key counter-clock wise until the front convertible frame is locked to the windshield frame. NOTE: Do not operate the vehicle with the top down and the storage lid motor disengaged as the storage lid is not locked and could open during driving. Z3 Roadster

1. On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the shift lever. 2. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, perform the following steps: 2.1. Apply the park brake. 2.2. Insert the ignition key and turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. 2.3. Depress the brake pedal and shift the transmission to the 1 position. 2.4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Remove the left sound insulator. Remove the right instrument panel sound insulator. If the vehicle is equipped with a multiple CD changer located in the center console, remove the center console. Remove the center sound insulator. Remove the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. Remove and retain the instrument panel storage compartment. Remove the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 11. Remove and retain the left and right speakers and the speaker grilles. 12. Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the windshield defroster grille. Retain the grille and sunload sensor for use on the next IP carrier. 13. 14. 15. 16. If equipped with a sun load temperature sensor twist the sensor 1/4 turn counterclockwise in order to disengage. Disconnect the brown electrical connection from the body control module (BCM). Disconnect the purple electrical connection from the body control module (BCM).
