CAUTION: The maximum amount by which the engine management system will adjust the camshaft timing (VCT control unit) is limited to 2 degrees. As a result of this an extremely high degree of accuracy is required for any work which affects the valve timing. NOTE: Steps which only apply to certain model variants and therefore do not apply to all vehicles are clearly marked. NOTE: The positions of the engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle towards the engine. 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 2. Loosen the front right-hand wheel nuts. 3. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 4. Remove the front right-hand wheel. 5. Lower the vehicle. 6. Remove the air cleaner resonator and air cleaner outlet pipe. 1. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) electrical sensor. 3. Remove the one bolt and two nuts. 4. Release the retaining clips. 7. Disconnect the speed control cable. 1. Disconnect the cable from throttle valve. 2. Gently move the cable up and down and pull it out of the retaining bushing. 3. Press the retaining bushing out of the bracket. 8. Disconnect the throttle cable. 1. Remove the plastic clip. 2. Unhook the cable. 9. Remove the timing belt. For additional information, refer to Timing belt in this section. 10. Remove the camshaft pulleys. 1. Remove the blanking plug from the exhaust camshaft pulley. 2. Remove the exhaust camshaft pulley. 3. NOTE: Hold the camshaft by the hexagon with an open-ended wrench to stop it from turning. Remove the intake camshaft timing belt pulley. 11. Remove the bolts from the variable camshaft timing (VCT) oil feed flange. 12. NOTE: Working evenly in several stages, unscrew each bolt two turns at a time. NOTE: Loosen the bearing caps in the indicated sequence. Loosen the camshaft bearing caps. 13. NOTE: Loosening sequence. Remove the camshafts. 1. Remove the camshaft bearing caps. Remove the camshaft seals. 3. Remove the intake camshaft. 4. Remove the exhaust camshaft with the oil feed flange. Installation 1. NOTE: Use a thumb to press the locating pins of the gasket into the holes. Press a new gasket into the oil feed flange. 2. Prepare the exhaust camshaft for installation. 1. Insert the oil feed ring into the oil feed flange. 2. Slide both components together onto the exhaust camshaft.

NOTE:Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in this procedure. NOTE: For additional information refer to TSB# 99-25-4 Installation All Vehicles 1. NOTE: Rotate the crankshaft clockwise. Rotate the crankshaft to TDC on cylinder No. 1. 2. NOTE: Cylinders No. 1 and No. 4 are at TDC when the Woodruff key points straight up. Remove the blanking plug, completely screw in the special tool and auto-align the crankshaft to TDC. 3. Position cylinder No. 4 to “valves overlap” and install the special tool. 1. Hold the camshafts by the hexagon using an open-ended wrench and turn them in the direction of engine rotation. 2. Slide the special tool onto the ends of both camshafts. 4. CAUTION: Do not kink the timing belt (do not bend the timing belt less than a diameter of 35 mm). CAUTION: Do not rotate the crankshaft; as necessary check that it is still resting against the timing pin. NOTE: Design with lower idler pulley shown (built up to 06/1999). NOTE: The lug of the belt tensioner should not be hooked in the sheet metal cover during timing belt installation. Position a new timing belt in place. – Starting from the crankshaft timing belt pulley and working counterclockwise, position the timing belt in place while keeping it under tension.

REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. 2. Loosen power steering lock bolts and nuts accordingly and remove tension from Power Steering (P/S) and/or Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor drive belt. 3. Remove P/S and/or A/C drive belt. 4. Loosen generator mounting bolts and adjusting bolt. 5. Remove generator bolts. 6. Remove water pump pulley. 7. Remove crankshaft pulley and timing belt guide plate. 8. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers. 9. Turn crankshaft so that timing mark on timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine. 10. Check that “I” mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on cylinder head cover and “E” mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on cylinder head cover. NOTE: Do not move camshaft or crankshaft once timing marks have been correctly positioned. 11. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt. 12. Protect timing belt with a rag. 13. Remove tensioner pulley. 14. Remove timing belt. NOTE: Mark the direction of timing belt rotation (on the timing belt) for proper reinstallation. INSPECTION NOTE: Never forcefully twist, turn inside out or bend timing belt. Do not allow oil or grease to come in contact with timing belt. 1. Replace timing belt if it is contaminated with oil or grease.

1. Align the timing mark on the timing belt pulley and camshaft pulley with the marks. 2. Remove all the spark plugs.
NOTE: This is to prevent compression while rotating the timing belt. 3. This procedure must be used to install the timing belt. (1) Install the timing belt tensioner and spring. (2) Position the timing belt tensioner all the way to the intake side, and temporarily
secure it by tightening the lock bolt. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft
pulley and the camshaft pulley from the tension side (the right side as viewed from
the front of the engine) so that tension is retained.
