Removal Procedure ^ Tools Required – J 42069 Timing Belt Alignment Kit – J 42098 Crank Hub Torx Socket Notice: Failure to follow the described timing belt inspection and maintenance may result in a broken timing belt and cause severe engine damage. 1. Inspect the cold start counter (also called a heavy duty register) with a scan tool. If there are any cold starts (below -28° C or -20° F) visually inspect the timing belt for cracks. It cracks are noted, do not reuse the belt. Replace the belt and clear the cold start counter. If the belt is okay, and is reused, do not clear the cold start counter. 2. Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Powertrain Management. 3. Remove the intake plenum. Refer to Intake Plenum Replacement. 4. Remove the timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement. 5. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolts. 6. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft sprocket. 7. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to 60 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). 2000 Cadillac Catera V6-3.0L VIN R 8. Install the J 42069-10 to the crankshaft sprocket with the knurled bolt. 9. Use the J 42098 to carefully turn the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction (clockwise) until the lever of the J 42069-10 firmly contacts the water pump pulley flange. 10. Secure the moveable lever of the tool to the water pump pulley flange. Important: Ensure that the crankshaft is not 180 degrees off TDC. The reference marks on the camshaft gears should be aligned with the corresponding notches on the rear timing belt cover at this point. If they are not aligned, the engine is 180 degrees off.

SPECIAL TOOL REQUIRED (or equivalent) ^ J-33039-A, Cam drive belt tension adjustment wrench. NOTE: O.E. manuals do NOT provide images of the timing marks, however, the alignment marks are located on the camshaft and crankshaft gears and the rear timing belt cover. REMOVE OR DISCONNECT 1. Battery ground cable, then partially drain cooling system. 1991 Pontiac J2000/Sunbird L4-121 2.0L 2. 3. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Coolant recovery reservoir. Serpentine, A/C and/or P/S drive belts (if equipped). Crankshaft pulley. Timing belt cover attaching bolts and the cover. Align marks on timing gears with the marks on the rear timing cover. Loosen water pump bolts, then using J-33039-A on the water pump eccentric, release the belt tension. Timing belt. INSTALL OR CONNECT 1. Turn crankshaft and camshaft gears clockwise to align timing marks on timing belt rear cover. 2. Timing belt, making sure that the portion between the crankshaft and camshaft gears is in tension. 3. Using J-33039-A rotate water pump eccentric clockwise until tensioner contacts high torque stop, then tighten water pump bolts slightly. 4. Rotate the engine by the crankshaft gear bolt 720° clockwise to seat timing belt on sprockets. 5. With engine at room temperature, rotate water pump eccentric with J-33039-A counterclockwise until hole in tensioner arm is inline with hole in base. 6. Tighten water pump attaching bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft lbs) and ensure tensioner holes remain aligned. 7. Timing belt cover and tighten bolts and nuts to 9 Nm (80 in lbs). 8. A4/NB TDI Engine Tools for 1999.5 Golf/Jetta and all New Beetle TDI timing belt replacement: 1. Injector pump alignment pin (3359) 2. Cam gear puller (4001) 3. Alignment guide plate (3418) 4. Cam gear holding bar (3036) 5. Toothed belt tensioning tool (T1020) 6. Stubby 5mm Driver (1/4” drive) Note paper towels stuffed into the intake to prevent “Murphy’s Law” from kicking in.This keeps you from dropping that flying spring clamp into an intake duct!! Raise up the power steering reservoir and pull the coolant reservoir hose under and to the front of the car. Cover the fender and let the coolant reservoir hang on the front of the car.upper timing belt cover and the flex line coming from the air filter going to the engine. I strongly suggest stuffing some paper towel in both holes to prevent you from dropping something into the turbo inlet. Using a 5mm 3/8” drive allen socket, remove all the front and driver side rear allen bolts except for the two by the oil filler cap. For those use the special cut-off 1/4″ drive socket that you made to remove them. Believe me when I say this, I have tried EVERY possible way to do this and I have stripped out a few heads in the process and this by far is the only true easy way to do it. Also disconnect hose to the valve cover, plug and and secure it.
