Disconnect exhaust system front pipe from manifold. Disconnect A/C pressure switch at rear of compressor housing. Lower vehicle and support engine with a jack. If not done previously, discharge and evacuate A/C system. Disconnect A/C lines at junction block. Remove screw attaching ground strap to strut bracket. Remove torque strut bracket from strut tower. Remove upper radiator closure panel. Without disconnecting lines from power steering pump, remove pump and bracket and set pump aside. 4. With engine properly supported, remove right engine mount through-bolt. See Fig. 5 . Raise engine with jack until engine support bracket bolts are accessible, and remove engine support bracket. See Fig. 9 . Remove lower timing belt cover bolts and remove cover. See Fig. 6 . CAUTION: When aligning crankshaft and camshaft timing marks, always rotate engine from crankshaft. Camshaft should not be rotated after timing belt is removed, or damage to valve components may occur. CAUTION: Crankshaft sprocket TDC mark is located on the trailing edge of sprocket tooth. Failure to align trailing edge of sprocket tooth to TDC mark on oil pump housing will cause camshaft timing marks to be misaligned. 5. Before removal of timing belt, rotate crankshaft until TDC mark on oil pump housing aligns with the TDC mark on crankshaft sprocket (trailing edge of sprocket tooth). See Fig. 10 . 6. Loosen timing belt tensioner lock bolt, and insert a 6-mm Allen wrench into hexagon opening located on top plate of belt tensioner pulley. See Fig. 11 . Rotate top plate clockwise until there is enough slack in timing belt to allow for removal. If reusing old timing belt, mark belt with arrow to indicate original direction of rotation. Remove timing belt. CAUTION: If timing belt was damaged due to incorrect rotating tracking (alignment), belt tensioner pulley and bracket must be replaced as an assembly.

All Vehicles 1. CAUTION: The maximum amount by which the engine management system will adjust the camshaft timing (VCT control unit) is limited to two degrees. As a result of this an extremely high degree of accuracy is required for any work which affects the valve timing. NOTE: The locations of engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine. NOTE: Operation steps which only apply to certain model variants and therefore do not apply to all vehicles are clearly marked. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 3. Loosen the right-hand front wheel nuts. 4. Remove the right-hand front wheel. 5. Remove the engine underschield (if equipped). 6. Remove the right-hand front splash shield. 7. NOTE: Mark the accessory drive belt direction if the belt is to be reused. Remove the accessory drive belt. 1. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts. 2. Working clockwise, loosen the belt and remove it. Remove the water pump pulley. 4. Remove the belt idler pulley. 8. NOTE: Using the access hole in the bottom of transaxle case to stop rotation of engine. Remove the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper. 9. CAUTION: The removal of the lower part of the engine front cover is necessary to avoid damage to the timing belt. Remove the lower part of the engine front cover. Vehicles with manual transaxle 10. Loosen the center bolt of the right-hand engine support insulator two turns. Vehicles with automatic transaxle 11. Loosen the center bolt of the right-hand engine support insulator two turns. All Vehicles 12. Loosen the center bolt of the left-hand engine support insulator two turns. 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Detach the coolant expansion tank and position it to one side.

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine undercover. Place wooden block between jack and oil pan, and raise engine slightly. Remove engine mount assembly near timing belt cover. 2. Remove clamp for power steering return hose near timing belt cover. Remove all drive belts and tensioner pulley bracket. See Fig. 1 . Remove power steering and water pump pulleys. Rotate crankshaft clockwise so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove crankshaft pulley. CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise. Ensure timing marks are aligned. If reusing timing belts, mark timing belts for direction of rotation. 3. Remove upper timing belt cover and gasket. Remove stub bolt of engine support bracket, and remove center timing belt cover. Remove lower timing belt cover. NOTE: Camshaft sprocket dowel pins will be in 12 o’clock position when timing marks are correctly aligned. 4. Ensure camshaft, crankshaft and oil pump sprocket timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 . Loosen tensioner pulley center bolt. Move tensioner to relieve timing belt tension. Remove timing belt. Remove timing belt auto tensioner. See Fig. 1 . 5. Remove plug from left side of cylinder block. Install a .31″ (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver into the hole against balance shaft. See Fig. 4 . Screwdriver must go in at least 2.36″ (60 mm) or more. If screwdriver will only go in about .79-.98″ (20-25 mm) before striking balance shaft, turn sprocket one revolution and align timing mark. Keep screwdriver in place until timing belt is installed. This ensures balance shaft driven by oil pump sprocket remains in correct position. 6. To remove timing belt “B” (balance shaft belt), hold crankshaft sprocket stationary with a spanner wrench. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt. Using gear puller, remove outer crankshaft sprocket. 7. Remove crankshaft sensing blade (if equipped). See Fig. 5 . Loosen timing belt “B” tensioner bolt. If reusing timing belt “B”, mark direction of belt rotation for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt “B”.
