Transmission Range (TR) Switch Removal 1. Disconnect the 2-pin and 8-pin transmission range (TR) switch connectors. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. 3. Remove the six engine and transmission splash shield bolts, engine and transmission splash shield screw and the engine and transmission splash shield (6776) . 4. Remove the shift cable and bracket nut, and the shift cable and bracket (7E395) from the manual shift linkage rod. 5. Remove the three TR switch bolts from the TR switch. 6. Remove the TR switch from the transaxle. Installation To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the TR switch. Refer to the procedure in this section. Tighten the TR switch bolts to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).

NOTE: If the transmission is to be removed for a period of time, support the engine with a safety stand and a wood block. 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 2. Place the selector lever in NEUTRAL position. 3. For vehicles equipped with a 4.0L SOHC engine, remove the fluid level indicator tube bolt from the heater hose bracket and remove the tube and indicator. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 5. If transmission disassembly is required; drain the transmission fluid. For additional information, refer to Fluid Pan, Gasket and Filter in this section. 6. Vehicles equipped with 4WD, remove the transfer case. For additional information, refer to Section 308-07B. 7. To maintain initial driveshaft balance, mark the driveshaft yoke and axle flange, so they can be installed in their original positions. 8. Remove the rear driveshaft. 1. Remove the four bolts. 2. Remove the driveshaft. 9. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Section 303-06. 10. NOTE: Mark the torque converter and the flexplate for correct alignment at reinstallation. Remove the four nuts. Rotate the flexplate to access all the nuts. 11. Disconnect the shift cable. 1. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Disconnect the shift cable from the bracket. 12. Remove the transmission wiring harness. 1. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connector. 2. Disconnect the transmission connector. 3. Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor connector. 4. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor connector. 13. Remove the three-way catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to Section 309-00. 14. CAUTION: Care should be taken not to damage the cooler lines. Hold the case fitting and remove the transmission cooler lines. 15. Remove the transmission nuts.

Removal 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Pull out the center instrument panel finish panel. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Pull out the center instrument panel finish panel assembly. 3. Remove the radio and center instrument panel finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 4. Remove the hood latch release handle. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Remove the hood latch release handle. 5. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover. 6. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. 1. Remove the four screws. 2. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. 7. If equipped, position the column gear shift lever aside. 8. Pull out the cluster finish panel. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Pull out the cluster finish panel. 9. Remove the cluster finish panel. 1. Disconnect the connectors. 2. Remove the cluster finish panel. 10. Remove the instrument cluster screws. 11. If equipped with an automatic transmission, pull out the cluster and remove the transmission range indicator. 12. Remove the instrument cluster. 1. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 2. Remove the instrument cluster. Installation 1. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to learn the strategy. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive shift strategy. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Section 414-00. 2. Loosen the clamps and remove the air cleaner tube. 3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 303-04. 4. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 1. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector. 3. Disconnect the speed control electrical connector. 5. Remove the transmission selector cable from the bracket. 1. Disconnect the transmission selector cable end from the manual lever. 2. Push the lock tab and separate the transmission selector cable from the bracket. 3. Position the transmission selector cable out of the way. 6. Disconnect the wire harness from the bracket. 7. Remove the manual control lever. 8. Remove the hood. 9. Remove the wiper arm and pivot assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 501-00. 10. Remove the passenger compartment air intake box. 11. Remove the air intake tube. 12. Remove the front upper radiator shield. 13. Remove the hood latch and position aside.

1. Remove the battery and the battery tray. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 2. Disconnect the breather tube and mass air flow (MAF) sensor. 3. Remove the intake tube and air cleaner cover. 4. Remove the air cleaner assembly. 5. Disconnect the transmission range (TR) sensor. 6. Disconnect the HO2S sensor. 7. Disconnect the transaxle harness connector and remove the wire harness bracket nut. 8. Position the wire harness bracket out of the way. 9. Disconnect the vent hose from transmission filler tube bracket. 10. Unclip the wire harness. 11. Disconnect the shift cable. 12. Disconnect the wire harness from the shift cable bracket to gain access to the bracket bolts. 13. Remove the shift cable and bracket, and position out of the way. 14. Disconnect the starter motor harness connector. 15. Disconnect the ground wire. 16. Remove two starter bolts, and remove the starter motor.
