NOTE: Samurai & Sidekick 1) Remove rocker cover. Rotate crankshaft until zero degree (TDC) timing mark of timing belt cover is in line with timing mark on crankshaft pulley. 2) Cylinder No. 1 should be at TDC on compression stroke. Remove distributor cap, and ensure rotor is pointed upward at distributor hold-down bolt and to No. 1 terminal of distributor cap. If not as described, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees. 3) Measure valve clearance between adjustment screw and valve stem using thickness gauge. Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 2 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 3. 4) Turn crankshaft one complete revolution (360 degrees). Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 3 and 4 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 2 and 4. Ensure clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. 5) If clearance adjustment is necessary, loosen lock nut and turn adjusting screw. After adjusting clearance, tighten adjusting Swift DOHC uses hydraulic lifters. Adjustment is not required. screw lock nut to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 N.m) on Samurai or 90-108 INCH lbs. NOTE: Hydraulic valve lifters are used; no valve adjustment is required. When valve and/or valve seat is machined, valve clearance is reduced and may cause improper valve operation. Different length push rods are available for correcting clearance. Valve lifter must be collapsed to check valve clearance. 1. With valve cover removed, position piston No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Completely collapse cylinder No. 1 intake valve lifter and hold valve lifter collapsed. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between rocker arm and valve stem. 2. Clearance should be within specification. Refer to COLLAPSED VALVE LIFTER CLEARANCE table. Replace push rod, if necessary, to obtain correct clearance. 3. Position crankshaft as specified. See, in this article, VALVE CLEARANCE CHECKING SEQUENCE table, and check appropriate valves. Replace push rods if clearance is not within specification. 4. If push rod(s) is replaced, ensure corresponding cylinder piston is below TDC. It will be necessary to loosen or remove rocker arm to replace push rod. Installation Instructions 1. Clean everything! Make sure that the engine mounting surfaces and your new timing set have been thoroughly cleaned with a good solvent. 2. If you are using a timing set with three keyways, select the appropriate keyway for your camshaft timing specifications. COMP Cams ® recommends the standard timing position for most applications. This position uses the round or “O” timing and keyway marks. Standard Timing Location: This is the same as original O.E.M. setting. Use keyway and crankshaft gear tooth marked “O”. 4 Degree Advance: Use keyway and crankshaft tooth marked . Note: The or advanced position should not be used without degreeing the camshaft. Many camshafts have the proper advance built in. Advancing the cam will reduce intake valve to piston clearance and increase exhaust piston to valve clearance. 4 Degree Retard: Use keyway and crankshaft gear tooth marked . Note: The or retarded position should not be used without degreeing the camshaft. Many cams have the proper advance built in. Retarding the cam will reduce exhaust valve to piston clearance and increase intake piston to valve clearance. 3. Install your lower timing gear on the crankshaft making sure that the timing marks are facing out toward you. 4. Now that the lower timing gear has been installed check the timing mark alignment in your engine manual. Rotate the crankshaft using your crankshaft socket until the timing mark on the gear is in the proper position (12 o’clock). For 240-300 6 cyl. see Note 1 before proceeding! 5. If your engine is equipped with a camshaft retaining plate or thrust plate, it should be installed at this time. Note that many Ford thrust plates are marked “back – bottom”. Before final installation check to make sure that the thrust plate is fitted correctly. 351W owners see Note 2 before proceeding! 6. Temporarily install your camshaft timing gear and rotate the camshaft until the timing mark on the camshaft gear is in the proper position per your engine manual instructions (6 o’clock).

NOTE: Adjust the valves only when the cylinder head temperature is less than 100ºF (38ºC). 1. ‘98-99 models: Remove the throttle body cover (A), ignition wire cover (B) and intake manifold covers (C). ‘00-02 models: Remove the throttle body cover (A), intake manifold covers (B) and intake manifold cover stay (C). ‘98-99 models: ‘00-02 models: 2. Remove the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) from the throttle body. 3. Remove the vacuum hose (B) and breather pipe (C), then remove the intake air duct (D). 4. Remove the throttle cable (A) and cruise control cable (B) by loosening the locknuts (C), then slip the cable ends out of the accelerator linkage. Take care not to bend the cables when removing them. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one. 5. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose (A), vacuum hoses (B) and Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose (C). 6. Remove the vacuum hose (A) (’98-99 models), breather hose (B) and water bypass hoses (C). 7. Remove the intake manifold. 8. Remove the cylinder head covers. 9. Remove the front upper cover. 10. Set the No. 1 piston at TDC. Align the pointer (A) on the back cover with the No. 1 piston TDC mark (B) on the front camshaft pulley. 11. Select the correct thickness feeler gauge for the valves you’re going to check. Intake: Exhaust: 0.20-0.24 mm (0.008-0.009 in.) 0.28-0.32 mm (0.011-0.013 in.)
