Note: All cable ties opened or cut during engine removal must be reinstalled at the same locations. Remove engine without transmission toward the front. Drained coolant must be stored in a clean container for disposal or reuse. Always replace seals and gaskets. Do not open coolant circulation system. Removing First determine whether a coded radio is installed. If so, determine the correct coding. Switch ignition off and disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap. Remove bolts (arrows) and remove engine covers -A- and -B-. Remove cover above air filter. Remove plenum cover. Remove sound-proofing material (arrows). Remove bracket for sound-proofing at unit support. Drain engine coolant => page 19-19 Remove front bumper: => Repair Manual, Body Exterior, Repair Group 63 Remove lock carrier: => Repair Manual, Body Exterior, Repair Group 50 Remove viscous fan counter-hold using 3212 spanner wrench. Note: The viscous fan has a left-handed thread. Mark direction of rotation of ribbed belt To loosen ribbed belt, turn clockwise using 17 mm box wrench until two holes are aligned (arrow). Counter-hold in position using 3204 drift. Note: Mark direction of rotation of ribbed belt. Reversing the direction in which it runs can ruin it. Remove ribbed belt. Cut coolant hoses -1- and -2- Remove coolant reservoir (arrows). Disconnect connector for coolant level display. Remove valve cover (cylinder bank 4-6).

Both cylinder heads 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information , refer to Section 100-02. 2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00. 3. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03. 4. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold in this section. 5. Remove the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03. 6. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section 303-05. 7. Remove the LH valve cover. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover — LH in this section. 8. Remove the RH valve cover. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover — RH in this section. 9. Disconnect the generator electrical connections. 10. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner. 11. Remove the bolts and the generator and generator mounting bracket as an assembly. 12. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector. 13. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers. 14. Disconnect the water temperature indicator sender unit and the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connectors. 15. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube fitting.

1998 Lincoln Continental Valve Cover RH Removal

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). 2. Partially drain the cooling system; refer to Section 303-03. 3. Remove the water bypass tube (8555); refer to Section 303-03. 4. Disconnect the fuel tube. 5. Disconnect the heater hose. 6. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) (6A666) from the RH valve cover (6582). 7. Remove the main chassis vacuum supply tube. 8. Disconnect the powertrain control module grounds. 9. Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring (12A581) from the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650). Remove the nut from the stud. 10. Remove the bolts and the ignition coil cover. 11. Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring from the four ignition coils (12029). 12. Remove the nuts and position the engine control sensor wiring out of the way. 13. Remove the four ignition coils. 14. Remove the cross-vehicle support. 15. Remove the valve cover. Remove the eight bolts and two studs from the RH valve cover. Remove the RH valve cover.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12. 3. Remove the air cleaner housing. 1. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector. 2. Remove the bolt. 3. Remove the housing. 4. CAUTION: To disconnect the Norma fitting, squeeze the tabs and pull straight out or damage to the fitting can occur. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube. 5. Disconnect the fuel hose. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00. 6. Disconnect the evaporative emission canister purge valve hose. 7. Remove the vapor management valve (VMV) cover. 8. Remove the VMV. 1. Disconnect the vacuum hose. 2. Disconnect the purge hose. 3. Disconnect the electrical connector and the push pin. 4. Remove the nuts and the valve. 9. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) vacuum regulator solenoid. 1. Disconnect the electrical connector. 2. Remove the screws and the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid. 10. Remove the bracket. 1. Remove the hose. 2. Remove the bracket. 11. Position the engine wiring harness up. 12. Remove the ignition coil cover. Inspect the gasket and install a new gasket as necessary.

Remove the right lower splash shield screws and the pin-type retainer. 5. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt. 6. Remove the nut and position the bracket and wiring harness aside. 7. Remove the upper generator mounting bolts. 8. Remove the lower generator bolts and position the generator aside. 9. Remove the generator mounting bracket bolts and remove the bracket. 10. Remove the bolt and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor. 11. Remove the power steering pump. For additional information, refer to Section 211-02. 12. Remove the bolt and remove the belt tensioner. 13. Remove the crankshaft front seal. For additional information, refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal in this section. 14. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the bolt and the sensor. 15. Remove the 2 oil pan-to-front cover bolts.
